Title: Is there a way to wire a joystick so . . .

a button has the identical function as another, for instance:


  X  Y  L
  A  B  R
L

I'm trying to devise a setup so I will be able to use a joystick (X-Arcade) with my ported Neo games, in essence making up for the lost button by transferring an identical L button, while also retaining the Capcom setup.

Wire the connection from the NO tab for both buttons into the same spot on your encoder.

yup, just wire one to the other's contacts.
Simple right? imagine it as a the grounds go to both and the positive is split to a Y and goes to both "L" buttons.

So they both have to have the same ground?

And the same wire for the other contact?

That's right.  That way either switch can close the circuit and send the keystroke to the encoder.

But this would be a non-issue if you're chaining all of your grounds together in one big loop.....................................................right?

I don't think X-Arcade uses a common ground for their encoder.

Your easiest option is to see http://www.xgaming.com/htm/programming.shtml and program the lower left button from C to X and the P2 lower left button from "Close Brace" to Q.

Alternately, you could wire the C button to the same inputs on the circuit board as the X button, but this would be more work and void your warranty.

I just looped a wire going from L to the other L (like how one would loop grounds).

I thought it didn't make a difference if the split was at the encoder, a Y before the switches, or as a daisy chain.  Aren't the following 3 schematics equivalent?
