Title: New DOT knob preview pics [now anodized!]
Post by: OSCAR on May 14, 2003, 09:06:08 pm
Here are a couple of shots of the DOT knob before they are anodized.  The shop did an incredible job on them, I think.  They nailed the internal knurl perfectly, it looks just like the original.  The internal knurl lets it glide between your fingers until you apply pressure when you grasp it.

Now a question, would there be any interest in these in the natural aluminum finish as well as the black anodized?  The more I look at it, I think the natural finish gives an even more "retro" look than the original black, so I am going to keep a couple natural finish ones for myself even if I have the remainder black anodized.  If there is enough interest in the natural aluminum I will offer both, though.  It's probably going to be about another week before I get the black anodized ones back.

Here's some info on the knob:  1.75" diameter, 1.00" overall height, 3oz weight.

Offer it in both dude :D

After seeing this I almost need to buy your DOT spinner (again I don't have the cash; I just bought a new LCD monitor)

I would really rather have the silver finish though.

All of a sudden, I don't like my OSCAR PRO nearly as much as I did before ...

How much?

I don't really need the bouncy bouncy, but that handle would be great on a regular spinner. I would also prefer silver, black is dumb. =)

Geez, thanks for making a good product; you jerk :-[

It really does make me feel worse about my spinners, congrats to you on this! It is quite the achievement.

black is dumb? ....that statement is dumb oh I'm sorry you don't agree with it , that's what makes it dumb.  You know, there IS a deverse group of people out there that don't beleive the same as you (what a surprise). Let me be the first to welcome you to the world that doesn't revolve around paigeoliver

Thanks for the comments!  Don't feel bad, anthony, everyone has to start somewhere.

The price will be $15 for these in the natural finish.  I will see if I can hold the finishing shop to the quantity price they quoted me for a full batch of anodized knobs even if I do a half batch.  If so, the anodized knobs will be the same price.

Paigeoliver has a good point, these aren't necessarily "DOT-only" knobs.  They can be used on any type of spinner, especially if you want to give your control panel a classic look and feel.

So, you can add these knobs to an existing Oscar spinner?

Dammit Oscar! You have some great friends in the machine shop business!

Can they make me some new shoes?

 :) ;) :D ;D

Unbelievable work Oscar, well done! Guess I'll be rethinking my control panel design!!

By the way, whats the situation on delivery times in relation to the spinner and silver DOT knob?

Thanks

Dexter

Looks great Oscar :)

I'd definately go for the 'natural' look non-anodized knob if you can offer it...

Just to throw in my $0.02, I would go anodized.  The black just would match my cabinet color scheme better.

Are the natural finish knobs coated somehow to prevent rusting?  Or are they some kind of stainless steel anyways?

I don't think aluminum rusts.

The DOT spinner is available now and the natural finish knob will be available as soon as I update the website later today or this evening.  As mentioned above, the black anodized version is about a week away.

kspiff -  Rusting will not be an issue, these are machined from aluminum alloy.

magnet-eye  - Yes, these can be used on an existing spinner.  No, I will not be offering shoes.   :)

I'm thinking I'll get a natural finish knob.  I've been pulling my hair out trying to figure a way to fit the whole thing in my panel, but I've only got about 3"x3" free spaces so I can't see it fitting.  Love the knob senator.

The natural finish DOT knob ($15) is now available on the website.  It will be approximately one week until I have the black anodized version available.

Excellent job with the new DOTs and the new knobs. Even though it seems you've made the decision to make the natural finish available already, I just want to add that it is a great idea. I like the retro, silver look. And since I think my CP is going to have a primarily black background graphic the black would get lost in the design. Silver makes for a nice contrast on black backgrounds and gives us some extra choices from a design standpoint when we're building our cabs.

Once again, fantastic job!

Hi oscar... I have a question....
about the black knob that you're going to put in production...

Will the color come off as time pass by ??....

Cos if after uses, it'll come off, I think I'll get the silver one...
(well.... my guess is if you're going to sell it... I don't think it'll come off easy at all...)
 ;)

well... can't wait to see a pic of the black one....

thx.... ;) ;D ;D ;D

A quickie primer on the anodizing process...

The anodizing process actually grows a layer of aluminum oxide (clear) on the surface of the aluminum.  When first grown the aluminum oxide is open-celled, so it accepts dye very easily.  The part must be dyed almost immediately after the part is anodized because the cells will close up over time.  Once the part is dyed, the part is sealed by either a chemical process or a steam bath which closes the cells.

The short answer:  No, it does not come off because the dye is trapped in the aluminum oxide.  But if you were to skip a knob down the sidewalk, then you could scratch off the oxide and take the dye with it.  Note that aluminum oxide is actually stronger than the aluminum itself, so it is a very durable finish.

I just got my DOT knob yesterday (un-anodized aluminum).

Very nice -- in fact, it's very quickly become my favorite spinner knob. The 'embedded' knurling is great. The knob edges are smooth to the touch, but put a little pressure on with your fingers and you hit the texture. Great for letting the knob slide through your fingers and then quickly "sticking it" into position with a slight grab.

The natural aluminum finish is great because you can easily polish it up with some Brasso to a (literally) mirror finish. Anodized knobs can't be polished (or at least, they won't get any shinier) The polished aluminum knob is very chrome, and very retro-cool.

Actually, styling is cool but the unique design is what makes it so game-worthy. I really like the feel of this knob during gameplay.

Highly recommended.

Kevin

I just received the black anodized DOT knobs.  The finish is jet black.  The price will remain the same as the natural finish version ($15) and they will be added to the website later tonight.

Here are a couple of photos:

Oscar I have a question.  Can I use the DOT knob with the Pro spinner?  I have no need for the DOT spinner and have been thinking of getting the Pro instead, but I really like the DOT knob.  Will the two work together or is it only for the DOT spinner?

The DOT knob can be used on any spinner that uses a 1/4" shaft, including my Pro and Model 3.  I don't mean to cause confusion by calling this a "DOT knob", it's just that it is a replica of the original and that is why I refer to it that way.

That's what I figured, I just wanted to make sure.  Thanks for the help!

The black is great -- just what I would expect a black anodized knob to look like (think "metallic black")

Good job, Kelsey!

Thanks for the nice comments!

But really, I can't take all the credit.  It's the guys in the shop that make the final product what it is.  I'm just the piece of meat that makes the drawings and writes the checks....  ;)

I've never really been in the market for a knob, but now I'm thinking I've gotta add that black one to my panel. The only problem is justifying a hundred bucks just for Tempest  ::)  Has anyone tried playing Gyruss with a knob? Probably wouldn't work since the game wants up/right/down/left to move in a full circle clockwise as opposed to just left or right. Rats.

i know this is a bit off the subject...but it IS a knob question that  is sold by the same person. would it be possible to get the engraved spinner anodized black? I bought a silver one, but really woulda liked black. I would buy another one if I could get black.

I will be offering the standard machined & engraved knob in black anodized as well.  This will be a few weeks away, though.
