hi folks,
i am using windows 98 SE and i am trying to setup the powering off by just pressing the power button as my keyboard is not accessible. But i do not want the scandisk to come up everytime i turn it back on. So in other words i am trying to gracefully shutdown win 98 SE by just pressing the power button like you can do in win XP but i am not having much luck! Does any one have any ideas on what i can do through the registry or something. The power management is enable in bios and the power management in the control panel says to shut down when the power button is press but it does not work....HELP. thanks Calude

Disable scandisk:
Run MSCONFIG
I think its uncer 'advanced', there is a checkbox that says something to the effect of 'disable scandisk after bad shutdown.'
Not sure if thats what you want, tho. I've done this on my carputer for the longest time, and no probs yet. You might also want to disable disk caching, I think theres an option for that, too.

:dunno
i am using windows 98 SE.. blah, blah
Using W98SE with what?
I've used, and still do, Win98SE on couple of projects. No shutdown problems..
Do tell, what's your software configuration? Can't help with the info available :(
...........later.

Sounds like you need to configure the power off settings in your bios. Set it to shutdown, then when you press the power button (on a ATX case) the PC will shut down. Scandisk will not happen at boot if this is set up properly.

You don't have to do anything fancy with software.
By pressing the power button twice, windows 98 will go through a proper shut down sequence and power off.
This is what I use for my cabinet, it works great.

That is entirely dependent on the motherboard/BIOS. Not all, and in fact not most, will do that.
EDIT: grammar fix

Big Brother Microsoft does not recommend bypassing the scan disk.
Are you using a frontend?
If so, you can map a button to quit the frontend, then use this program to properly shut windows down:
Another shameless plug for a product created in the catacombs of my mind, but hey, it's free. (http://skennys_outpost.tripod.com/thelauncher/index.html)

Ed is right. I've done this to all my win98 set-ups and it works fine. One press of the power button and it's off. One press again and it boots back up, no-prob. People say it's bad on the hard drive but I don't buy it. I've never had a crash yet.....(crosses fingers)

hi folks,
Thanks for all your replies but my problem still stands. The bios is correctly configured as the power management is enable. P.S. the pc was install previously with windows XP and the power button was working fine. When i say fine, i could press my power on/off button and the pc would automaticaly properly shutdown by closing all apps. Then on powering back up the scandisk would not come on as a proper shutdown was down.
Then for the power management in the control panel is also configure to shut down on power button press. But when its press the pc goes into Hibernation which i do not want...i want total shutdown. Then if i hold the button for 3-4 seconds it will just shutdown but then on powering it back up the scandisk runs. I know that i can turn the scandisk off but what is that actually doing to my hard disk.
The hibernation control thru the register as to be somewhere and if i can access it or find it then i could modify it to do a shutdown instead of hibernation.
As i am setting up a cocktail table i do not want to have to open it everytime to take out the mouse or the keyboard everytime i want to play a game...besides i don't want to take a chance and spill my beer...hahaha!!!!
Then i also have some young kids that just love to play with it and the simpler i can make it then the better.
Thanks all for your time and efforts

If you can't solve the OS/BIOS weirdness, maybe consider a software shutdown from your FE? I shutdown gracefully by hitting P2-Start in MaLa.

The power button on the keyboard would have to be supported by a keyboard driver. I don't believe the baseline keyboard driver supports the fancier keyboard functions.

Win98SE had issues shutting down cleanly on some(most?) systems. Try the shutdown suppliment patch from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/239887 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/239887). In past that fixed a lot of machines with this type of problem. Disabling scandisk was always the secondary fix around here.

because i use mame32 in my cab (yeah i know) i use a macro that maps 'fire' and 'player 2' to shut it down. since its win98 on a 2ghz computer it happens pretty quickly (",)
-
hi Danny,
Tell me more about that macro...please i would interested. the only type of macro's i know are the one in word.
Also, what is wrong with mame32. that is what i'm using!!!!!is there something better or more efficient.
Thanks everyone that as been inputting greatly appreciated. Being new at this there is a lot to gather and try to see if it can work with my configuration.
I bought this cocktail cabinet for only $30/cdn...and slap in a 450 Mhz, 256 of ram, 20 gig hard drive and running win 98 se...did try it with windows xp but was to slow the games and sound was horrible. so but win 98se and it runs rally nice. i have not change the out side of the cabinet at i was trying to keep the originality of it (vintage) but my next project will be a jukebox from scratch including the cabinet. if any one as input it would greatly appriciated for software and hardware to use.
Well got to go before my boss catches me here....cheers

absolutely nothing wrong with mame32. i think its great. but it looks way too 'windowsy' for my cocktail. when i get the chance, im going to use atomicfe on the cocktail as it works fine still using mame32 and looks absolutely NOT windowsy. i dont have my cocktail here right now, but the macro was one i found on the net and may have not entirely paid for the full working version ;)
i dont know much about pc's but im guessing the word macro does similar things. the macro i used can map everything you do, even mouse clicks (from memory). so the one i use is just imitating me shutting down the pc.

Set up one of the function keys to the keyboard shortcut sequence for shutdown. I can't remember what it is for 98 but it is probably very similar to "win key - u - u". That's what it is in XP.

This might help.
