Title: Video of Oscar Up/Down spinner in action
Post by: KevSteele on May 14, 2003, 05:40:47 pm
Kelsey has let me know that the DOT knobs are nearly ready to go, and I'll be uploading my review of the Oscar Up/Down spinner and MAME Spinner Roundup articles to my site as soon as I get the knob.

In the meantime, since it looks like it will be this weekend or Monday at the earliest before I get the DOT knob (and can then finish my MAME Spinner Roundup and Oscar Up/Down Spinner review), I've decided to put up a short (13 seconds) video showing the Oscar Up/Down Spinner in action.

It just shows the up/down motion and the sounds of the spinner in action, but I thought it might be interesting to some of the spinner fanatics here.  ;)

It can be seen here:

That is so cool.  I want one even more now  :P

Unfortunately, I can't find a 5"x5" free square on my CP.  Depressing.  I think the Tornado may be the only spinner that will fit in my CP, and I really wanted the up/down capabilities :-\

Hey Kevin,
Thanks for the video!  I had a question maybe you or Kelsey might answer.
It appears in the video, the first time you spin the spinner that the spinner unintentionally drops down possibly making contact with the down leaf switch.
I thought that Kelsey stated that it really wouldn't move up or down unless you intended it to move.
Just wanted to know your thoughts on this.
Thanks,
JD

Hey Kevin,

The spinner top is "bouncy," so you need to watch how you spin the knob. When I was "flicking" it I found my fingers would push down a bit, making the knob "bob" a bit when spinning it. If I flicked hard enough, it would go up or down enough to contact the switches. If I changed direction suddenly, I occasionally pulled up on the knob a bit.

Basically this shouldn't be a problem during gameplay, because you probably won't take your fingers off the knob. It probably won't happen with the DOT knob, as well.

So, your saying that you think there will be a difference regarding the "bouncyness" of the spinner with the DOT knob?
The reason I'm asking is because I was planning on purchasing the traditional knob for this spinner.  I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the easy (tacky) grip on the side of the traditional knobs...
Where, maybe, there's less vertical grip on a DOT spinner...
Thanks.

I think that, considering the design of the DOT knob, you'll be holding the knob differently, which should reduce any "bouncyness" when you spin.

I won't know for certain until I get the DOT knob, but that should be in a day or two. I'll post back with my findings.

I did discover that using the SlikStik skirted knob with the Oscar Up/Down spinner reduced the "bouncyness" effect.

I think it's all in the way you hold your knob...  ;)

Well, I won't share how I hold my knob..... But, I will look forward to your reveiw on this topic with the DOT knob.
Thanks.

Just a quick follow-up: I got my DOT knob yesterday (Thanks, Kelsey!)

In a word: cool. Two words? Retro-Cool. It's a great knob, with wonderful "embedded knurling" -- a smooth surface until you grip, then your fingers find the knurling.

It's perfectly balanced, no wobble, nicely machined.

And yes, it does help prevent the "pull up/down when turning" effect with other knobs. It makes the up/down motion of the DOT spinner very easy to control.

I like it. A lot.  ;D
