I've been reading this forum for some time, and am currently in the process of building my own full sized cabinet. In most of the plans I see people run 2x4's up from the bottom of the cab to form the base of the monitor platform. Is this a bit overkill? Wouldn't screwing a horizontal 2x4 under the monitor platform to the side of the cab be strong enough even for say a 50lb tv? I just don't want to add all that wood if it will suffice with a more simple solution.
FYI, I'm building mine out of 3/4" birch ply.

You will be fine if your using plywood to screw to. its when folks use particle board sides that the extra support is needed. You might want to add some wood glue as well just to feel good aboiut it.

Yeah, I'm learning that plywood, especially 3/4" plywood, is INCREDIBLY strong. I'm using 3/4" Poplar on my CP top and I feel fully confident in having 1/4" left to support anything. I took a 1/4" thick scrap to see how much weight it could hold. I stood on it with my 165 pound body mass and it didn't break. The stuff is INCREDIBLY strong. The full 3/4" could easily hold any monitor you could throw on there.

I secured a 1.5x1.5 to each side horizontally then mounted a pane of the 3/4" ply on top of that. I sat on it and it seems solid as a rock. Glad I didn't add all the extra wood!
