Title: Motherboard AGP upgrade question
Post by: IG-88 on December 26, 2007, 08:13:14 pm
I'm wanting to upgrade the old 128mb vid card in a system I have but I'm a little (ok, alot) behind the times. The manual says that the AGP slot is a 4X. Can I run 8X in it? Does anyone have any good suggestions/recommendations on what card to purchase? I like this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161205

but I don't think I got enough mobo to run it.

I'd like to keep it under $150 if I could. Other than that I really don't care what I get. I'll probably upgrade the PSU also.

wow for mame thats overkill!!

unless your using that system as your htpc :)

even you current card with 128mb is more than enough (unless it's one of those TC cards)

opps and if the mb agp is 4x the 8x agp card will only run at 4x :(

honestly for 129 just for the agp I would save up and buy a c2d mobo (using pci-e) and cpu

Well actually it's for various PC games I plan on running on the machine in the future. I wasn't necessarily getting it for mame. You should see some of the other machines I have. I got a 166 mhz w/16mb ram and a 2mb ISA vid card in a half completed bartop that runs the classics perfectly.  ;)  I actually like testing out various Inde' games and retro remakes that I find scattered about. Some of them now are asking for more horsepower than this old soon-to-be-upgraded-to-arcade-cabinet PC can handle. Hence the Vid Card question.

So I gather from what you said an 8X card will only run at 4X on this mobo, hmmm....The card in it now is a 128mb. Wonder if I found a 512mb 4X card. Would that be worth the investment you think??

I'm guessing you're running a machine 1.8ghz or less, correct?  The 512 VC you ask about, IMO, won't help you.  I'm in a similar position as you with a secondary machine and the machine itself is the weak link, not the video card.   You might want to save for a newer machine...

Yup, a 1.6 to be exact. I've thought about maxing out the Ram, CPU and the vid card, but you are probably right, maybe I should save up for a newer build.  :-\

yea no real point in upgrading you v-card

it's your cpu that is the bottleneck for gaming and mame

depending on your mb you can upgrade the proc (for quite cheap) and that will make a world of difference
