Title: Does anyone use M.E.S.S ?
Post by: BORIStheBLADE on December 23, 2007, 12:04:00 pm
So I never messed with it, but I was wondering if anyone has messed  with it? Are you better off using a frontend and importing more than one emulator instead?

I heard someone at another forum mention it, but I don't see anyone on here talk about it. I figured if it was worth using people on here would be using it.

MESS is fine for some systems. Specialized emulators will have greater compatibility and will be faster and more faithful to the original console or computer. Some systems that MESS try to cover simply don't work at all at this moment (Odyssey 2 and PCE, for instance)

As a rule of thumb, I use MESS (with MALA as a frontend) for everything. *IF* I'm not satisfied with the compatibility on a certain console, then I go and find myself a specialized emulator for that.

The great thing about using MESS is that you have a common interface (tab menu, etc...) to all your emulators and it is very similar to MAME.

On a side note, MAME Plus is incorporating some of the MESS drivers, which I think is a great idea. I hope they go on with it and incorporate all the working/stable MESS drivers.

So this emulator would be good for NES,SNES etc?

Well, mostly yes, from my very limited experiments. Thou one of my favorite games on the SNES (Zombies Ate My Neighbors) has some graphic glitches during the presentation, the rest of the game runs fine.

My point is: If you have some experience setting up MAME + MALA (or any other front end), MESS is very easy to set up. Just install it and try it first with every system you want. If you find out that it doesn't work propoperly, then go find yourself a good specialized emulator.

MESS is an excellent emulator (well multiple emulator system).  Some of the systems it emulates it does quite well (ColecoVision, TI99/4a, and many others).  I have ported it to the gp2x handheld and have done work on the Odyssey2 emulation system.

It's great that people in here are using it.  I also agree about the specialty emulators.  In my set top box I use something other than MESS for NES games.
