Title: PS2 Slim v.13 technical problem
Post by: ratzz on December 22, 2007, 11:03:04 am
Hi guys,

Anyone know anything about repairs for the PS2?

I had a 'disk not spinning' issue, and thought the laser may have burnt out. I replaced the laser, but the problem still exists.

Any ideas chaps?

Wouldn't a disc not spinning error indicate a problem other than a problem with the laser? The disc needs to spin before the laser can pick up any data.

Doesn't the Slim PS2 sport three switches to know when a disc is inserted and the door closed? Have you checked the switches to ensure they're still working correctly?

I can't see the motor failing but it's something that might be looked in to. I have disc players from the early 1990's whose motors still work.

Thanks for that ...

This is how things (apparently) work.

Any CD type device uses the laser for an instant to check if a disc is present. If it's not, then it doesn't initialise the motor for the spindle. So the laser failing could cause the disc not to spin as it doesn't "see" one present.

It seems that it was my mistake, and the laser unit I purchased needed some additional work (removing a blob of solder for anti-static purpose(??)) to make things happen. I have done this using a soldering iron and solder remover and now everything works like new!

I must admit that when I ordered a new laser for the PS2 I thought, "How can this be the problem, surely the motor has burnt out!?!?!", but I was proved wrong.

Anyway, this is the solution to the infamous "Disc Not Spinning" problem with the PS2. Just remember to remove the solder 'blob'.

Oh I see what you're getting at. Alright then.
