Title: Single switch for monitor and PC off/on?
Post by: pharaoh on May 13, 2003, 01:41:58 pm
Howdy,

Trying to think of some kinda switch that will sit inline with the AC power to the monitor, and be able to turn it on and off (which is a constant contact for on and off).  Thing is, I also want the same switch to be able to provide a momentary contact for the PC board (which is momentary contact on and off).

This single switch pull/push should be able to:

- create a constant circuit to for monitor on/off (inline w/AC)
- create a momentary circuit for the PC motherboard on/off

Any ideas on this?  Thanks in advace!

check your motherboard settings....
(when you boot your machine...)
pres "del" or f1 or whatever to go to setup...
then check if there's a power tab...

in there... you can select if AC power resume,
startup your computer....

then you plug everything to a normal switched 6 outlet...
you turn it on and the pc will go on by itself....
(that's what I do...)

when I shutdown... I shutdown in windows....
then the pc power off itself... once its done... i turn off the main switch....

hope it helps...

Yes, shutdown is not that important.  I have a Win98 batch that runs when the player exits ArcadeOS, so that is taken care of (you still have to turn the monitor off, but that's fine).  I'll check the BIOS for the option you mention, but I don't think it's there.

Thanks!

I never power off my monitor, just turn off the pc and monitor goes into "sleep". Never had a problem with my monitor either (it's 3 years old)

so let it be written... so let it be done...

Here's a relay DIY approach  (http://home.bendcable.com/werstlein/)

probably more info than  you need but that's more than a good start on some of the proven methods for powering up stuff triggered by your pc starting.

Good luck!

Thanks guys!  My problem has been solved.  I will use the "G3 enable" switch in the BIOS to get the job done.  It's basically a "resume after power failure/removal" switch like hyiu recommended (thx!).  Even if the BIOS doesn't have the setting, I can use a PCI-space editor to flip that bit and enable it (Intel board).  That way, a single switch inline with the power strip will do the task I am looking for.

Appreciate all the help on this!

in there... you can select if AC power resume,

groovy!

i didn't know that existed...i normally never go into the power option in BIOS...

mine also has the option of powering up after any key is pressed...think i'll use the power resume option though
