Title: wanting to put videos on blog...whats the best way to do it? (hosting)
Post by: hulkster on December 14, 2007, 12:56:50 pm
one of my friends has a private blog that he shares with family members and close friends only on windows live spaces.  its got the standard pics and blog entries and what not.  he's got some videos of his little girl that he wants to post...er...embed in his blog for his family members to see but is worried about it being seen publicly and would rather it stay private.

the only video posting site i know of that you can have videos hosted yet stay hidden...is the msn video soapbox thing.  youtube, google video, etc are all publicly accessed.

do any of you have suggestions on the best place to host videos so that he can embed them into the page?  i told him to do soapbox, but he said that when his family members play the video, they also have access to all the other random videos posted on soapbox, and hed rather them not be calling him every time they get confused on seeing the wrong video.  any suggestions?

Google video allows an upload to be "unlisted"

If you have a video you'd rather not share with the entire world, you can choose to restrict access to it by marking it as "unlisted." Similar to an unlisted telephone number that isn't available in public phone number databases, videos that have been unlisted are not accessible through Google Video search results. This option is especially useful for family videos. Just set your video to "unlisted" and email the link to your family and friends.

so there would be no way for anyone to see unless they had a direct link?  he wants like, controlled access i think.  like, set permissions or something.  what about a hardware solution?  internal hosting on a server or something?

It looks like it would be direct-link only with Google. If he wants permissions-based access, I figure he'd need to either host a server himself or find shared hosting that allows for user set permissions...

There are millions of hosts, and everyone has their favorites... try Web Hosting Reviews (http://whreviews.com/) as a start if you're interested in doing some research.

After researching a ton of hosts, I chose A Small Orange (http://www.asmallorange.com/) and have been very happy with them. I've only been with them for about two years, but have nothing but good things to say.
