Blasphemy! I thought you where talking about a different type of pot...  :-\

Well I can't tell just by looking but I believe there are two types of potentiometers. The resistive powder film type and the resistive wire type. I'm pretty sure I'm way off on what they are really called. But regardless you can tell the difference simply by turning the knob. If it turns smooth then its the resistive powder. If it feels kind of bumpy/scratchy then it is the resistive wire. But from the looks of it, it looks like the resistive film type.

If your trying to find out the value then use an ohmeter on the two outer pins. That will usually give its total resistive value when the dial is set to its max. You can tell if its bad if the value shoots either up or down while turning the dial then goes back to the previous value after a little more turning. This means it has a burned spot when it went bad. There are some cheap pots that have an exponential point. Basically the value has a drastic change towards the end. Those are usually the cheap ones and I doubt they would use that type for a controller.

Is it picking up the buttons?  PC game ports expect a 100k pot; most arcade pots are 5k.

If it's not picking up the buttons then this has nothing to do with the potentiometer.  It's an interface or driver problem.

What kind of interface cable did you get?  Did it come with any drivers?

Some USB to DB15 adapters have different modes to emulate different types of sticks.. perhaps yours isn't in the right mode?

Did Windows detect it as a game port?
