Title: M.A.M.E - Game Not Over (project progress - Back online)

Excellent!
However, why put the dogleg on the lower backside?
It looks like extra work for something that most will not see. A straight back will save you time, effort & possible frustration & will still look just as well IMHO.
The cab may also be a bit less stable with that portion missing (though not much if at all) depending on it's actual depth.
With that said - It's still a really great looking design.
Looking forward to seeing the finished product.
Actually, does anyone ever finsh one of these, there is always something new to try or something more to add isn't there?

The idea of the instep at the back would be that I could then place the cabinet flush against the wall, in my house I have a fairly large skirting board, plus this would also allow me to place it in front of a mains socket and still get easy access to it if needed.

Thats definitely in the top 5 for best looking cabinet.

wow! That looks great! I am going to build a UAII style cab too and your sideart is exactly what I was planning on (minus the 'game not over'  slogan). I was going to use blue T-molding but maybe black is better. The 2-tone dark blue bottom, black top is what I was aiming for as well.  I was planning on a 4 player coin door though.

Will you make copies of that side art available?? I would live to get a copy!

I really like the sideart and marquee, but the lower part of the cab sort of clashes with the blue in the rest of the art. I think it might look better in black, with blue t-molding for contrast.

Is that side art real? Or did you just design it now?

If you have seen it somewhere please tell me where.

Any ways to answer your question, love the design very clean, and simple.

1 or 4. The contrast is a welcome change.

Most original classic cabinets were coloured. I can only think of two or 3 cabinets that were originally black...... of course every hack job conversion was black..... Pick a colour! It looks great.

I really don't like the two piece cabinet designs.

Having the cabinet in more than peice is more of a requirement than preference. I've finalised the design at last and the cabinet will seperate into three sections (top, bottom,cp) by simply undoing a few quick-release bolts.

This allows easy access for maintaince and more importantly lets me move it about the house (or out) if needed.

Hey GSXR, can you expand more on how exactly the sections join together (especially the top and bottom)?  Is it sturdy?  Being able to partially disassemble a cabinet to get it in and out of the house sounds MOST useful!
Title: Re:Cabinet redesigned - Need opinions
Post by: GSXRMovistar on June 01, 2003, 04:06:52 pm
Is it sturdy? Well at the moment its only a finished design, I still need to find some time to build this lump. But from what I played with so far it should be very solid, I have seen a few different types of quick-release bolts as B&Q and I've yet to decide on which to use. If i get some free time this week I'll finish up my 3D guide which will show how this all hooks together, so stay tuned!

That is a fantastic looking cabinet.

Here is the answer.....

Top half of cabinet paint color:
Keep black since it really makes you side art shine.

Bottom half of cabinet paint color:
Pick a dark blue shade (like your picture 4) in which you can also find matching T-molding (might need to buy the T-molding first and then match up the color as paint).

After painting is completed:
Add black T-molding to the bottom (dark-blue) half (like you show in picture 4) and then add the darker blue T-molding to the top half of your cabinet.

Note:  If the blue T-molding does not match the blue paint, it probably will not look right, however, if it does match, then WOW what a cabinet design.  Make sure you stick with the darker blue shade ranges for T-molding since if you do not (and pick a light shade of blue), the blue T-molding placed over the "dark" black cabinet will "stick out" too much (ie: people will just notice the T-molding) .   I like how picture 1 looks but I think the T-molding in that shade would stick out too much.  Stick to a blue like in picture 4

PS:  Make sure the dark blue you pick is not too dark as to be mistakened for black.....obviously.

How about posting a pic of my idea (basically your picture 4 with the same blue color used as T-molding on the top part) to get a better look at it, then take a re-vote.  :>)

Looks pretty slick, that's gonna be an awesome cabinet for sure.  You might wanna consider getting Cyberpunk or someone else to do the printing on such a big piece of side-art, since Kinko's is getting notorious for ripping us Mamers off for big artwork.  You should also see if you could somehow get ahold of some blue coin door buttons, www.therealbobroberts.com might stock them, that'd be kinda neat to have that, then put blue leds behind them instead of normal lights to truly give it that BLUE feel.
The only thing I don't see on there is the way you're gonna get access to the PC, if you're gonna have the keyboard just chillin behind the cabinet, or if you're gonna have it setup so the coin door can open and you can access the front of the pc, etc.  Maybe stick a power button on the back would work best?  Also, what kinda sound system are you thinking of putting in there.  I can suggest something: buying a 3-set of Altec Lansing speakers, take the satellites outta their cases and mounting them on the top part like normal arcade speakers, then putting the subwoofer on the bottom.  Having a subwoofer can really help get that umpf from the music when playing some arcade games, like Metal Slug 3 especially, every scream from the bad guy when you shoot them sounds great with a nice extra BOOM.

Which type of printing should I order for sideart and overlay?

P.S. I never noticed or mentioned it before, but I like the way you set your Neo Geo buttons. It's the same way I wanted to do mine, but I don't think I'll ahve the room. Having the 4th button in the bottom left would be a pain. Being in the top right is infintely easier and more intuitive.

Outstanding work, I personally would go with black for the bottom of the control panel.  I think that the blue looks odd because it lacks the black t-molding on the edges likt the blue area under it...the black just seems to flow better in that area.  But thats just my opininon.
