Title: N64 controllers
Post by: tommy on December 02, 2007, 09:48:23 pm
Anyone know of an easy fix for the joystick part of the N64 controllers when they start to get real loose and unusable? Maybe there is a way to replace that stick with another joystick type?

I have a few little ones who still enjoy this system and the controllers are getting really bad.

Get a new one?  They're only a few dollars...other than I'd open it up and look at it.

i think chad and shmokes have both had a go (in their youth) at fixing em, as have i recently. i have a mad plan to make a bullet proof one, one day  ;) the n64 joys are photo-optic like the old style mouses (meece, mice) so sadly you cant use a joy out of a cheapo modern controller because they all seem to be the resistor type.

but there still seem to be replacement joys around with a bit of looking. i bought one from these (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Nintendo-64-Joystick-Repair-Thumbstick-Replacement-N64_W0QQitemZ260189481468QQihZ016QQcategoryZ3580QQcmdZViewItem) guys and it was fine. i have been using it for a couple of months now and its still good. i couldnt tell if it was BRAND new or not but it feels as if it is. dont get one from a crowd on ebay called gameznetwork. i ordered one from them and it never arrived. then they wouldnt answer my queries until i commenced an action with paypal, THEN they started talking to me. too late, i gave em negative feedback AND got my money back  :)

You pretty much have to swap the stick with a NOS one or find a new controller.  There isn't any way to repair them... that particular part was just made with the wrong materials.  It is too small and precise to repair unless you're a way better plastics person than anyone I've met so far.

I need to get off my butt and buy some NOS ones soon.

If only we could get the GC stick in that space instead, that would be great.

Maybe another option is taking a spare GC controller and cutting off the end input into the console and adding a N64 one, that way we can just plug a GC controller into the N64? Somehow i have a feeling this has been done and is not possible.

wow, they have heaps more n64 stuff than when i first looked a while back. might have to get a few more bits and pieces.

tommy, you could also try an aftermarket controller although the one i had died after a little while (bloody joy of all things!)

That's cool, thanks.

I never took one of these apart till one of the kids spilled soda on the thing and gummed up the buttons so they wouldn't press anymore. I had a few controllers that were tossed away where the cords got chewed up really bad and some cords got pulled right out of the whole controller itself, had i known i could have taken the sticks out of those.

A wii analog stick should fit... (I dunno about the electronic end) and they are the first re-design of the nintendo stick.  If you could fit one of those in it'd be more durable.

dont you have to take it from a working wii mote then?  seems kinda odd when a wii mote is more than a n64 controller.

No, you take it from a nunchuck, which is only 15.00.

You can get used n64 controllers for much less, but not new ones.

If you are seeing them in person, though, it's very easy to see if the stick is good enough to buy.
