That is exactly what you need to do. Why would that be a frightening or scary thing to do? All your trying to do is cut through the caulk to separate the "seal" between the counter and the sink. Its really not that hard to do. Should be done carefully, but its really not that big a deal. :dunno

As narrow as that kitchen was, I'd say it'd be easier IF you're going to completey change out the sink, do the cabinets and counters at the same time.
