Just wanted to send a big thanks to OSCAR. I received my Pro3 spinner last week, and honestly this is about the first time I have come up for air (Tempest has taken over 99% of my spare time). I can't comment on the other spinners out there, which I am sure are quite good as well, but the Pro3 is a quality piece of equipment with an added bonus: the installation is so simple I'm pretty sure anybody can do it.
Back to the games!

Thank you for your nice comments, Dave! Sorry to have you addicted to Tempest now! :)
Just for clarification to anyone else, Dave ordered an Oscar Pro w/ the Engraved knob.
-
Gotta love that engraved knob...very cool...

i bought the same combo...haven't installed it yet, want to get in anodized black, and will paint the lettering the same green as the happs buttons...can't wait till i can actually play with it.

D'oh! Not sure why I called it the Pro3 spinner (it is the Pro). I must have combined two products into one there. I agree with Kevin. That engraved knob gives the spinner just the right look and feel.

Just got the regular spinner (had to, space considerations!)...with engraved knob......Oscar Rulez :)
Now....to think about taking a sharpie to black out the MAME in the knob..Hmmmm ;)

Guys anything simply printed or painted onto a knob or dial will eventually be wore down by the oils in your hands. Keep that in mind.

The recess should greatly add to life of any paint or marker application. Not to mention your hand hardly touches the center of a spinner.
I use a Sharpie over the engraved serial numbers of thread gauges and such in an industrial application. It lasts a year easy, even in those nasty conditions. It'll be fine in your home. Take a look at the engraving...... You're not getting into those crevices. It's silly to think your hand will wear it off! Gawd.

Don't get me wrong I love my Oscar engraved spinner, but you can't beat a real Tempest knob for playing tempest...just wish someone who was in the spinner business would start producing them again...hint hint.... ;)

I will be using an oil based enamal on recessed anodized ( rough oxidized )surface with a clear protective coat...it isn't going to just rub off.
-
YES! and the beauty of the Sharpie is ease of use..you can always re-paint in 20 seconds...
i do this with many objects, like my chrome belt buckle with a naked woman on it like a mudflap...i have to re-paint that thing every 2-3 weeks. no problem, its painless...
Howard is just a stick in the mud. always raining on parades. :-\
party on! 8)

I have always used sharpies extensively in arcade game cleanup. Good for those rusty bolts that you don't want to take out to paint because they hold the cabinet together. Great for touching up almost anything black.

If you really want it to last a while (and a ton of color choices), fill the recessed logo with crayon wax. Scrape a crayon back and forth acros the top til the logo is full, wipe off any excess on the flat, and then hit it with a hair dryer to stick it all together. (We used to do this with skate board wheels back in the day.)
Or, I may be full of crap. It's late, I can't tell.

The SlikStik aluminum skirted knob comes really close (actually, I think I like it better than the original Tempest knob!)
The domed top and side contour really make gripping the knob easy, especially for quick changes of direction (which is the definition of Tempest play ;)
