Title: Carriage Bolts
Post by: bball on May 10, 2003, 03:47:45 am
I've done some reading around in the forums and I plan on using the 3/16" black carriage bolts to mount my joysticks but I'm wondering how to drill the hole for the carriage bolts.  I've seen in some threads that carriage bolts have a square or hex block under the head.  Do I have to use a countersink bit to make space for the square block under the head or can I just drill a normal hole to mount the carriage bolt ?  I have a feeling this has been discussed on this board before but I couldn't find it.

If you are using a wood Control Panel, just drill the hole and when you tighten it, the carriage bolt will sink in and create it's own square.

If you're wanting to sink into metal or platic, I recommend drilling the hole, then squaring it out with a grinding bit in a dremel.  If you try to tighten the bolt into plexi it will, more likely than not, crack.

Hmm.. now that I think about it I am going to mount the lexan on the cp using carriage bolts.  Is there a special router bit or dremel bit I can get to make holes for carriage bolts ?
