Hello (again) everyone,
I posted an ad a while ago regarding my KLAX machine...
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=71404.msg733046#msg733046
I had a guy come over to look at it and he confirmed what people from the forum had thought was the problem...that the "flyback" was toasted...and therefore needs to be replaced.
Unfortuantely, the particular model that it uses seems to be pretty scarce.
What it needs is model FB3016. Does anyone know where I might be able to find one? Or if another model can (safely) replace it?
Please let me know. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

So this is for a WG K7900 series right? (K7901 or something)
Can WE confirm that first?
19" or 25" ?
Is there a label on the flyback with a number like 053X0528-001 ?
-
perhaps you would be better off getting a new 19" cga monitor rather than repairing this one
-
That was what I was thinking.
I have a Compaq S910 19" cga monitor available. Is it technically feasible to use this monitor with that old of a machine? (ie. can the "input" plug on the monitor be adjusted to connect to the "output" plug of the arcade console)?
If you think this would be a better (and possible) option, please let me know. Thanks.

Computer monitors use seperate positive sync signals. Arcade game boards that are JAMMA, generate composite negative sync. Most commercial arcade video game monitors have two seperate sync connectors available to use: one is for negative sync (seperate or composite) and the other is for positie sync (seperate only). So no your computer monitor would not work since it expects to see seperate horizontal and vertical positive sync signals not a combined negative sync.
Why don't you give us the make and model of your monitor and we can tell you what flybacks are available or not available.
-
Thanks Ken. That's good (but a bit disappointing) to know. I hope I can find a suitable flyback then.
Do you mean the make and model of the monitor already in the console or the make and model of the Compaq monitor I have available to (attempt to) use as a replacement?
The Compaq monitor I have avialable as a replacement is the Compaq S910 19" monitor.
As far as the make & model # of the screen on the inside of the KLAX game goes, attached are photos of all of the labels I could see when I opened the back. I hope this is all the info. that you need to determine what a suitable replacement would be for the FB3016 flyback.
Once again, thanks everyone for your assistance.

Wells Gardner 19K7901
Doesn't that one use the same 053X0528-001 flyback as most any of the K7000's ?
-
I don't know. Does it anyone? (I hope so!) :)

You have conflicting information. One of your pictures shows a Sampo monitor label. Yet another one shows a Wells-Gardner label. What exact monitor do you have?
-
I would assume (from the labels) that I have a Sampo monitor and a Wells-Gardner Chasis. The Sampo (and Zenith) labels are on the back of the screen/picture tube itself. The Wells-Gardner label is located on the metal frame beneath the picture tube...(ie. what the tube is mounted on / attached to).
When the guy came to look at it, he ended up taking out the part (which I was told was the chasis) that had the flyback on it. He showed me the part that was broken...which was apparrently the flyback. It had a big crack in it.
He took it with him and said that he would try to find a replacement FB3016, but warned me that it might be hard to come by. I mentioned that I had a Compaq S910 19" monitor that I wasn't using and he told me that if he couldn't find an replacement flyback, we could try to use the S910 as a replacement (ie. option #2). He said he could try to adjust the input plug from the monitor to match up the output plug from the game.
This all happened was back in October. I wanted to give him enough time to attempt to find a replacement "flyback". However, because I would like the KLAX fixed before the holiday season, I contacted him to see what the status was. He said that he wasn't able to find a replacement flyback and told me that I might want to make a final search for one myself. Which is what this topic started out as....looking for a replacement for FB3016.
I have no problems using the S910 monitor to replace the existing one, since I don't use the S910 for anything...but Ken you think I won't be able to because of a difference in sync signals?
I would just like to get this game console back up and running. As I am not familiar with the terminology / technology of monitors, CRTs, electronics, I have NO idea what are my options are...and would really appreciate any assistance on getting this game fixed.
What would you say my options (if any) are? Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

I looked in my Sampo KGR series service manual. That flyback matches Sampo part numbers. You're screwed....that flyback is not available and is impossible to find.
Your only hope is to get either an 8liners.com or Wei-ya replacement chassis to get that thing going.
-
SnotRockit - can you take a pic of the actual chassis for us to look at?
Ken's right about the conflicting manufacturers. I saw that the Sampo label was on the picture tube, so I just ignored it all together since the WG label was from the chassis area.
Did that technician that looked at it for you get that Sampo flyback part number right off the flyback itself? Or did he just look up that Sampo model from the label ?
-
I'm not certain...but I believe he took the model # (FB3016) right from the flyback...but I will confirm with him about that.
Now Kevin mentioned a number (053X0528-001) in a previous response. Is this the type of number he should be looking for (ie. a longer number) on it?
I would be VERY surprised if there is no flyback that is "compatible" with the 3016... but I don't know much (if anything) about flybacks, so its not fair for me to "expect" that a replacement flyback should be available. Is KLAX THAT ancient? :'( I hope not.
I will check and post as soon as I know. Thanks again.

That's a Wells gardner part number for the K7000 type monitors.
And parts for the monitors really have nothing to do with what game it is or how old it is..... it all just depends on what make and model monitor is actually in there. And of course it could have been changed, swapped out, modified, or just plain ol' hacked in during all those years. (hence you have Sampo and Wells Gardner information on yours)
So verifying what monitor chassis you actually have is the only way we can help with something like the problem you have since we're not there to physically look at it ourselves like that technician has the oppurtinity to.
-
Your best bet right now mate is to get a picture of the monitor chassis (boards) for us to have a look at. Before that, we can't even be sure what chassis you have. If it IS a Sampo, and you can't find the flyback replacement, your best option would be a whole replacement chassis. If it's a wells gardner, parts should be no problem.
Picture is the next step here
-
I called the technician who has my chassis. He took a look at it to find any model numbers on it. He told me he could find only one number on it. The chassis #: CG-19C
This tells me that the chassis is from Sampo...since it matches the Chassis # on the label of the back of the picture tube itself.
So Kevin, it looks like you were correct when you guessed that the game might have originally had a Wells-Gardner chassis...but it was replaced with the Sampo screen/chassis (CG-19C). Nice diagnosis Kevin...but DAMN!!! That means I'm either "screwed" or I have to replace the whole chassis. Correct?
So now I have to find a CG-19C chassis...or at least a one to replace it. Does anyone have any ideas on what models from other manufacturers are comparible (and available)? Roughly what does a chassis run?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I just checked at 8liners.com (thanks for the link Ken). It looks like they have a 19" Chassis for any CGA Monitor. 8 and 10 pin / high or low impedance available. [Model #1220H]...
http://www.genao.com/osc/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=29&osCsid=22ce5b4cf021f9d6b60083a6142fc5ac
Would this work as a replacement chassis? Please advise.
Thanks.

You'll need to measure the yoke impedance to be for sure which one to get.
Haven't found much on that Sampo chassis or the flyback.
Just a manual from arcarc.xmission.com:
http://arcarc.xmission.com/PDF_Monitors/Sampo_19in_Color_Monitor.pdf (http://arcarc.xmission.com/PDF_Monitors/Sampo_19in_Color_Monitor.pdf)
Hard to say if there is a compatible replacement without a bunch of specs from a known good one.
-
Wow... I haven't been to the 8liners website in a while. It looks like they no longer sell the Jen Shinn chassis anymore and only sell the Wei-ya 1220 series chassis. Also looks like 8liners jacked up the prices on chassis to $70 (up $5 from $65).
Still looks like the best prices and selection of replacement monitor chassis is still Alva Amusement.
-
So would I be better off then going with the 19" framed monitor with the chassis?...
http://www.genao.com/osc/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=22&products_id=31
There doesn't seem to be that much difference in price between the chassis alone and the monitor and chassis (but I'll be the shipping cost for the monitor would be a ---smurfette---!)
