Title: Need help setting correct resolutions O_o
Post by: ilGaspa on November 20, 2007, 08:38:25 am
Hello everyone :) After a little forum digging I bought a JPac and decided to
try to use my PC with a Geforce 6600GT to transform an old cabinet into a mame
multigame cabinet. I tried to understand all the resolution issues with mame
from other posts, but I'm still pretty much confused... O_o I have:

a PC with a Geforce 6600GT
a cabinet with an horizontal Hantarex MTC9000 monitor
Soft15KHz
high hopes :)

would someone be so kind to tell me what's the best way I can configure resolution
on my hardware, to see horizontal games as good as possible and to avoid cutting
vertical games? A friend told me to use AdvanceMAME, but I'd prefer Mame32fx...

If you can swing it, I would highly recommend ArcadeVGA from Ultimarc:

http://www.ultimarc.com/avgainf.html (http://www.ultimarc.com/avgainf.html)

It takes care of switching resolutions automagically for you.  No hardware stretching!

I ordered a bunch of stuff from Andy and left this off of my original purchase list.  I have since gone back and gotten it, and I am so happy that I did.  It works absolutely flawlessly and the games look fantastic.

As for getting by with your current hardware, I'm not sure that there is any way to do it without AdanceMame.

Thanks :) I left out the ArcadeVGA for now as I have little budget, but I'll buy it in the future if I have no other choice :) A friend shown me that with AdvanceMame i should be able to obtain similar results... the point is that I'd prefer using Mame32fx for the hiscore.dat support. Now there are a few things I can't understand (and google isn't helping)

Obtaining 15KHz output:
I should be able to do so using AdvanceMAME, Soft15Khz or Powerstrip (as my 6600GT is supported)

Centering each resolution and adapting to screen:
AdvanceMAME does this for each resolution, but I don't know how to do it for Soft15KHz or PowerStrip. Maybe using the tool that comes with AdvanceMame and then copying the produced custom15khz file? or there's a better way?

You don't need to use advancemame if you use Soft15khz.  Once you get the CGA resolutions added with Soft15khz, just launch MAME32 and you should be able to select the low resolutions from the drop down list.

Thanks :) My jpac should arrive this afternoon, I'll try to do as you suggested.... there's still one thing I don't understand however O_o soft15khz should unlock the resolutions I need, but how do I center them all in the screen? My arcade monitor (an Hantarex MTC-9000) only allows adjustments for one resolution, so I can't use it's controls as every game would be affected... How can I move up/down and left/right each res as AdvanceMAME does?
