Title: Help a brother out...
Post by: BrentRadio on November 16, 2007, 03:04:06 am
Ok, here's the deal. I want to try and raise the listing on google of my Space Invaders Info site. That way when someone searches google for Space Invaders, they have a better chance of finding my SI page. And hopefully saving this classic game.

So if you would, please click on http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.brentradio.com%2FSpaceInvaders.htm&btnG=Google+Search (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.brentradio.com%2FSpaceInvaders.htm&btnG=Google+Search) and then click on the link to my site. It will say Space Invaders, and have the number of visits next to it. Right now it's only on 4 visits. I'm hoping that by increasing the number of visits, google will rank the page higher, thereby letting more people find it.

I'm interested in seeing how high we can get it.

Thanks,

Brent

Hi Brent,

Unfortunately, there is more to rank than visitor numbers. Your better chance of being ranked higher is through referral (and many other things that I'll come to in a minute). That is, popular site that have a link referring to your site. Google search engine sees this as meaning that your site must be important and ranks it higher.

Other factors include content and how its written, and also if the site has errors in the code or not.

HTH, and let me know if you need any more information.

How do I submit it to google?

http://www.google.com/addurl/

Also, be sure to add it to: http://www.dmoz.org/

A direct link in your sig here and on other message boards will help; every post you've ever made becomes a referral url for Google to count.

I was going to add it to the restoration wiki, only to realize that I had done that long ago ...

Hi Brent.

Do you have any info about this flyer on your site?

I actualy have a t-shirt with this on it and i thought that the images had been 'made up', I didnt know it was a print from a real flyer. Wow, I like it even more now  :)

If you input bartop jukebox into google my site is the first one that comes up.   Does that mean I it has links to it that give it that spot?   I have not submitted anything to google or put any of those tags on it so don't know how it ranks so high.

One of the first things you should do is make sure all your mark up language is correct.  The more accurate your markup, the better google bots will be able to navigate it from what I've read.  See the link below:

http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.brentradio.com%2FSpaceInvaders.htm&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=Inline&group=0

Also, make sure all your images have alternate text tagged in them, use H1 (heading) tags where possible, meta data, etc.  Making changes to your pages takes a few weeks to show up with ranking changes.

Its quite a precise search and there are also plenty of references to it in the wiki and here, so maybe thats why.

Also, you do not need to add a URL to Google for it to be found. Google uses 'bots' to search for new websites all the time. Some web designers (me included) don't ever submit a URL to Google as it will be picked up within a few days anyway.

Adding a URL to http://www.dmoz.org/ is always good practice though as dmoz take a lot of the submission work away from you.

As long as your site is bug free, has good content (text within the site) and the key words are repeated (but not abused) you will be in with a shout.

You might have just gotten lucky.  I used to be able to pop in certain combinations of "Street Fighter 2 gottlieb" or "SF2 pinball" or whatever and my dopey GeoCities site would could up #1.  Never did anything to promote it, either.

Yep. again, the more obscure the search, the more likely you site will be found.

You have to be aware though that people may not type your obscure search in to be found, so keywords in the content should cater for this.

The domain name is also an important consideration also, so that should reflect what your site is about.

Looks like you've got (as of this post) 2350 webpages linking to your site, all on the high-traffic arcadecontrols.com.  Gets your Google ranking up in a hurry.

dont worry if you dont submit it to google. its just a way of getting a head start on its next web crawl. put your link directly in messages too, that counts like so:

                                         http://dannygalaga.com/mame.htm

see, by doing that ive increased the chances of MY site getting higher in the ranks (",)

post it in other topic related forums too...

as the others have said, make sure everything works. but also check from time to time that all your links work on your sight...
