I'm trying to find a diagram of the original Nintendo DK 4-way/8-way joysticks. I can't shake the feeling mine in my Donkey Kong machine is missing a part. If I'm holding the joystick, I can pull it upwards nearly a quarter inch. That doesn't seem right. Like a spacer sleeve is missing or something. Either that or it's assembled incorrectly. You can feel that while you're playing, and it doesn't seem right. Or is that how they're supposed to feel??
Does anyone have a pic of the assembly breakdown for one of these? It would be mucho appreciated.
PS: If anyone has a couple of long leafswich buttons, just the buttons, in DK blue, who wants to trade for 2 short DK Blue leaf buttons, let me know. I ordered the wrong length... :dunno

You could pull the handles up quite a bit; that's normal. Weird, but normal.

All spring-based joysticks can be pulled straight up a certain amount. It is an invariable byproduct of the design. If they couldn't be pulled up like that, then they would also not be able to move in any direction, by default.
Nintendo joysticks tend to be more noticeable in this regard than others because they have weaker main springs than most other joysticks, so they pull up easier. It comes in handy for Super Punch-Out, because for that game, a game function was retrofitted to the joystick's ability to pull up.

Right, so even if it feels broken, it's not. It just feels great, you understand? That's the feeling of high quality goodness you're experiencing, not sloppy brokeness. Seriously. It's not the stick, it's you.

You're trying to derail this thread too? Saint allowing the Tron handle thread to split off and remain un-Post Helled wasn't enough for you?
BTW, to the OP, put a taller spring (taller when fully compressed as compared to the height of the stock spring when fully compressed) in the joystick and it won't be able to pull up as far, and/or put a stiffer spring in there (which will make it so it doesn't pull up as easily).

Actually, you derailed it genius. The guy asked for a diagram of a nintendoh joystick so that he could discern if something was wrong with it, and you told him there couldn't possibly be anything wrong with it, so get over himself.

By that line of "reasoning" Ptolemy, Kremmit derailed it.

Cool! Well Alexander's calling, must want a reading of the stars or something, so I'd better be running along.

And naturally, there's still no diagram as per the request. ;D

I don't have a diagram but from his description, his joystick is working normally. If he was missing any of the mechanism parts, he'd know it.
If the E-clip was missing, then the whole thing wouldn't even stay together. Same deal with the lower spring guide/plug. If the upper spring guide/plug was missing, then the spring would have no tension. It goes without saying what happens if the spring itself, or the shaft, or the base is missing.

There should be a diagram in the DK manual. Almost all Nintendo Arcade Games have the same stick and the same diagram in the manual.

Why would they need a diagram in the manual if they never, EVER break? Just so you can gaze lovingly at the construction? I don't understand.

I'm going to cut through all the petty internet I'm-smarter-than-you wars that seem to be flaring up here lately, and say THANK YOU to whoever pointed to the manual. There was an assembly diagram for the stick in there and it turns out my stick is complete.
Thanks to those who didn't use this thread as a place to pick fights with each other. It was a pretty simple request.

And like I said before, you can modify the characteristics of your joystick simply by changing the spring. A stiffer spring will give a more positive feel and make it harder to pull straight up. A taller spring (referring to the height when fully compressed, so don't just stretch the existing spring) will make it so it won't pull up as far. You could try a spring that is a little stiffer and a little taller. You can pick up a hand-full of different springs to test out at your local hardware store for a few dollars.
One of my spare Nintendo joysticks has had the spring replaced before I got it by a taller spring and it barely pulls up at all. I prefer the stock spring myself, so if I ever needed to use the joystick I'd put a stock spring in it.
The way I use those tiny 4-way Nintendo sticks is to just lay my hand on the CP with the stick between my thumb and forefinger. I don't actually grip the stick so it is never pulling up accidentally.
