Hello,
I'm trying to take another shortcut here...
Can you give me a few game lists ready to use with Mala?
- ex : fighter, classics, favorites...
So I can used them as a start point for my own list?
Jay.
PS: another quick question, in the forum, can we do a search for a specific string?
ex: searching for "game list"
Thanks

I'd share mine, but AtomicFE gamelists don't work so well with Mala...
;D
However, check out Nop's util - you can generate your own native Mala gamelists:

OOoOh.. I just installed AtomicFE last night to try it out.. I love it, other than the damn video snaps won't show up.. no matter how many/different codecs I install.
I'd appreciate the game list post, Havok.

Uninstall ALL your codecs, and then only re-install Xvid...
(Rather than derail this thread, PM me if you still need help.)

D'oh! But I like my other.. oh ok.. FINE. :)

is there anyway to filter non english text clones? on many games if you filter the clones the parent rom is the japanese version so the US version gets filtered..

mala has a game list editor which is really simple to use. really simple.
you open it ,click on gamelist ,click on add selection and a pop up box opens with drop downs , select what you want and name the list as you desire, then you just add it in mala, honestly mate its a piece of piss.

honestly mate its a piece of piss.
easy but time consuming with 4000 games in the list :D

if you want custom lists maybe, but if you do it by genre theres what 20 or so, the editor selects the games for you.

well.. I was referring to weeding out all the clones by hand.. If you filter them automatically it just filters everything but the parent ROM. In many cases the parent ROM isnt the version you want. It might be in Japanese or something. That's what I meant.

that's a really good point. I think there should be something in controls.dat or somewhere that tells us what the language of the game is in. Certainly, some Japanese games are completely playable to us non-Japanese speakers, but having that type of tag somewhere would be really nice to filter on.
Can you give me an example of a clone/parent where the clone is in English and the Japanese is the parent? I might be able to tweak romlister to find those, but I need something to work with. Otherwise you could use romlister to single out all the clones, and then go through just those by hand to see which ones you want to keep.

That's what romlister can help with.
Either get rid of the games that can't possibly run on your machine first, to trim that big number down to something more manageable by hand, or build a list up specifying the controls that you do have. For example, if you don't have a trackball or spinner, make a list with none of those ROMs in the mix, then import that into Mala and trim it down from there.

Here's mine. It's by no way complete but mostly a few games I plan to add to the original roster once I get my cab up and running. It currently doesn't have any vector games since the version of MAME I'm using for Mala can't run vector games. It's stupid actually. Anyways, enjoy...

If mala would let us type the name of a ROM and have it jump to that ROM name on the gamelist, then there would be no problem. But as it is, if you type SF to try and get to Street Fighter, you just end up at the top of the F list with a disappointed look on your face. This makes making gamelists by hand excruciating.

Well you'd have to be a dope to make the gamelist inside of Mala. That's why MalaGamelist.exe is included in the Mala package.

Well, right off the top of my head.. Pacman :) The parent rom is Puckman so everything else gets filtered out.. Of course there are others that I cant think of right now. Of course, some games were only released in Japan so you wouldn't want to filter those out. I guess you would want it to find the latest revision of the game and in English if possible. The parent ROM isnt always that..

Thanks a lot efjayel,
this will be a good start point for my fav list :applaud :applaud:
If anyone has a good list for children games (8-10 years old), please post it here.

Here's a screenshot of me typing "STREET" in MalaGamelist.exe in a feeble attempt to get to Street Fighter:

Oh dear, it thinks I want to play T-MEK, I must be a dope!
(assuming you were talking to me and not polaris)
Good info in here. I'll start using ROMLister, looks awesome!

durh! pac-man I should have thought of that one. heh.
Anyway, just playing around and I found that adding "& license" to the ROMLister query brought up some interesting results. Might help dig out the ones that were at least legally brought to the US, otherwise "& !japan" seemed to strip out a few.
This is going to be tough for sure. If you can think of any other japanese=parent, us=clone, please let me know. there just may be something in there somewhere, but I suspect there will be no magic bullet.
