I have a Popeye that I'm trying to restore and I have three monitors with which to do it.
Monitor 1) Came in the cabinet, dull colors, blotchy. Took it out, adjusted colors and brightness, all of a sudden it looks crisp and beautiful (not necessarily due to my adjustements). I put it back in, dull colors, blotchy. Looks like it needs to be degaussed. Do the degaussers go bad and sometimes correct themselves? Would a cap kit help?
Monitor 2) Nice colors, top 3" smear to the right (horizonatally). Did a cap kit, no change. Any ideas? Any other caps I didn't replace perhaps causing this?
Monitor 3) Beautiful colors, slight burn in from Dr. Mario but looks fine behind smoked plexi and when running game. Top 1/2" smeared (scores). Tried adjustments. Will a cap kit fix this?

the ptc components can go open circuit thus not operating the degauss coil
as for your others it does sound like caps or adjustments.

Is there a way to fix the degaussing coil?

you can try replacing the ptc component,may do the trick otherwise buy a degaussing wand as they are always helpful

I have spent hours working on a few monitors that ended up being video connector problems. The monitor looked great one minute and then was missing colors/dark/hazy the next time I turned it on. Sometimes the punch-downs to the connector work loose or the pins get pushed back.

thats one good reason to reflow the input pins and to double check your harness for damage or corrosion on the pins....

Generally the round disc looking component you will find near the plug in on the main chassis for the degauss coil. They can also be found contained in a small square box. Without getting technical about this, it acts as a switch based on the current flow and tewmperature change due to that current flow.
It is ON when cold, OFF when hot.
