Title: Badge of shame
Post by: saint on November 12, 2007, 09:55:27 am
Anyone want to make me a badge of shame graphic? I want something I can attach to users who haven't quite earned a ban but are being idiots and are making my ban finger itchy. I'm hoping perhaps public shame will help. Something arcade oriented, maybe with a "***THWAP*** You have annoyed saint!" logo with a hand thumping someone upside the head?

Hello Saint,

it's an honor to be able to help you for once  ;D

I think I have the perfect badge of shame...

Do you remember "Terrible Terry Tate" from Reebok advertising?
He was the office backliner (kind of football player making sure that everyone in the office was as efficient as possible.  If he would work in my company, he probably would tackle me down right now....  :laugh2:)

Anyways, in one of his "episode", a HR specialist was giving some "Badge Of Shame".
(this was intended as an alternative for TTT rough methods).

So here it is, in pdf format...

I saw that, but didn't think it was "blinged" enough.

I wish they'd make a few more TTT commercials.

Heh... wow. How ironic. I worked on the Terry Tate spots as the VFX artist. We did the cuts here where I work. There were tons of TT spots - I think well over 20 - we cut that never made it to air. Most of that footage ended up in webisodes on Reebok's site I think. It's good to know somebody still remembers that stuff. Small world. :P Too bad for copyright infringement, or we could make a Terry Tate shame animation from the outtakes.

In fact, I never saw a spot on TV.
But I have all of them on my computer  ;D
I used to go see the new sequence once a week to get the new footage...
Those were really funny  :laugh2:

Saint,
you could always do something similar to the TTT badge of shame.
With a slight modifications (ex: use a monitor/tv logo instead of the plain square) you could easilly reuse the main idea without "violating" the copyright stuff (am I right PH?)

Or you could go with another idea like a "joystick of SHAME".
Anyone with photoshop skill could do something nice in a few minutes of work...

I envision a animation where a toe creeps over a line and then saint's hammer smacks down on it and it throbs it's way back onto the right side of line. Like Pink Panther style or something.

In honor of the pit bull thread, I propose a variation of the Woot probation icon:

How about a generic white background with a random self insult? Simple, yet highly effective.

Better yet, a flashing background to draw more attention.

The idea of brandishing people sounds a bit icky to me though.

Doesn't sound bad to me. Sometimes, people don't know they are on the edge, especially the crazy ones (you know who I'm talking about). This is just a visual warning to remind them.

Well if that's the goal then sent them a pm or an e-mail. The badge of shame is supposed to brandish them a "crazy poster" for all to see.

The current system of warnings isn't working.  Time to try a new one.  PMs have apparently been tried and we've all seen the public warnings that didn't work.

publicly ridicule
Not sure why your taking this stance on the warnings Patrick.
I'm not sure why you call it warnings. A pm is a warning. A badge of shame is designed to put people to shame. Hence the word "shame" in the name  :P

Anyway, I got the notion of public ridicule from Saint's post:
I'm hoping perhaps public shame will help.

I'm not saying it's as bad as the badge of shame they put on jews during WWII, but it does give me a weird feeling. I'm also not saying that Saint is unfair or that he's a dictator. Far from it. I'd say it's all reasonably harmless. Still, I'm surprised that I'm alone in thinking it's icky to put a "donkey cap" on people.

... I doubt the community will all stand around pointing fingers at someone when they've managed to get a badge.

We sure as hell will.  I may even hire that guy to do custom artwork of us pointing fingers at the person whose shirt carries the Scarlet A-Hole.

On a site I frequent, http://tfarchive.com/community/, banned members get the graphic tagline 'Eaten By A Grue'.  I always thought that was funny.

OK, I just saw the badge of shame "in action". It actually looks kinda cute. Maybe too cute and people will be proud to collect them  :P

I like it attached to the offending message. I guess I wrongly assumed that by "attaching it to the user" you meant replacing their avatar or something so the user would be brandished for the whole forum.

This is much clearer to the offender than the bombs where often 5 people were misbehaving and it wasn't clear who actually deserved the bombs and as a result no one seemed to feel the bombs were meant for them.

That will get caught by search engine spiders and start associating this whole forum with them.  Not cool.  Imagine the Google banner ads that would pop up.  Hell I say remove that link entirely now before these guys start showing up.

Didn't think of that. Link removed. Maybe it could be redone with an innocent link, but with a clever intro that makes it look bad.

If you took their logo, renamed the file, and hosted it locally, that would work... but of course you'd still have their logo on your site.  It's bad enough having a Giants logo spinning around here.   :)
