Hello guys, i been out of the scene for a while now, last time i had internet i had mame 105, now that i got my equipment back again i tried the new version, 120 , and it didnt work the way i spected, i wonder if is my computer or if i have to tweak mame to make it work smooth. mi pc especifics are, p3 1000 mhz,40gb hd, 256 pc100 sdram, and a old onboard videocard intel 8281 oe. i tried pacman and it work slow, so if theres something im missing please help me. Thanks for your time.

Step 1. Upgrade video card
if that doesn't work,
Step 2. Upgrade computer
if that isn't possible, or if Step 1 isn't possible,
Step 3. Keep older version of Mame.

You will notice a major difference even with a cheapo video card, onboard graphic's just don't cut the mustard when it comes to running application's. :)

so, in other words, the latest mame dosnt, its not for older systems.....
too bad, i used too like that about mame, mostly for older games...
thanks...

I always understood that MAME didn't rely on a souped-up video card as the purist dev's didn't consider this true emulation?

You're right on one part of your statement, but incorrect on another.
Mame doesn't rely on a souped-up video for emulation, true.
HOWEVER, mame can and does use a high end video for converting from the original resolution to the PC monitor res, adding bezel art, adding scanlines, buffering screens, etc. Also, the default settings have changed: direct3D is default instead of directDraw, directX 9.0 instead of direct 8.0, switchres is off instead of on, ect. Each of these changes favor semi-modern video cards over old cards.
So step 1 could have been an extensive list of settings to change that differs depending on the exact old video card and it's weaknesses and version of mame and monitor type & res abilities and games trying to play (among other things) that might not help enough (especially with the system the OP has), or the simpler "Upgrade video card". [shrug]
As Havok hinted at, a P3 1 Ghz should be enough for pacman if you had a decent video chip set (and maybe more memory and maybe some changes from default settings) with current mame. Otherwise, step 3 or step 2.

Back again,
I have Mame roms for 121 version, so going back to 095 its not like the best option, i wonder if theres another port of Mame for old computers like mine, Cu's i teawk Mame settings allot and still got too much to desire, just to give you an example, i use to run kof 95 with no problems, now its slow as hell, or popeye or punch out, they use to run well now they are way to slow to be played..
nevermind, i downgrade to 100 and most of the games i play, they work just fine, thanks for the help ;D
