Well this guy just beat Through the Fire and Flames on expert difficulty...I think I made it 5% into that song once :)

Wow, that really is impressive. Whenever I see someone get into this game to that level, I can't help but think: Why doesn't he just play REAL guitar??
I've played GH a few times, but I get bored with it pretty easy. I have much more fun screwing with my real guitar, reading tabs and trying to match real songs.
-
I had a used guitar and GH1 in my hand at Gamestop last night and put them back... just wasn't into spending the $55 combined to get them, I guess.

Is this find a result of the latest South Park?
While I commend the guy, holy crap, geez, he certainly has the talent to learn the real thing.
I played GH2 once. My strum thumb got tired and overworked after two songs.
-
I played on medium for a while, then moved back to easy. I had to teach myself to strum down and up. I don't think I will ever be good at it because I don't have the time to practice. I have fun playing it regardless of my skill level. I had a guitar for years, but never had time to learn how to play it. At least on GHIII it sounds like music even when you suck. :D

It was a result of someone posting it on another site, I guess they might of been inspired by Southpark though :dunno

I've beaten all but 2 songs and the final boss on extreme mode and I rarely strum up, usually just down. The only exceptions are when its gets insanely fast and you need the extra speed (such as some of the parts in Knights of Cydonia).

this isn't directed just to this thread or just BYOAC but...
Why is it every time someone sees a Guitar Hero video like this, people must instantly rave about "learn the real thing" and/or bash the person for "wasting time' or some such because its just a game.
It's so absurd. Maybe he DOES play guitar, and even if he doesn't why does becoming good at a game elicit that type of remark? I've had people say it to me and i'm not 1/10th as good as that kid and it just makes me laugh. Especially when I tell people I DO play a real instrument, which usually shuts them up.
Of course people who still want to be smartasses say "you play bass, not guitar" haha.

Yeah, ya know...
If your good at Call Of Duty 4, should you instead go out and become a real soldier?
If you are good at Madden NFL, should you go and play real football?
etc...
There are plenty of people in both those professions that play the game versions, and have a blast doing so.
Just as there are plenty of people that play guitar that also play Guitar Hero.
Aside from that though...
It is still a game, and it is NOT the same thing as the real thing. There is a HUGE difference between 5 frets with what is essentially 1 string (button/strumbar) and 22 frets with 6 strings.
-
Madden and Call of Duty don't use football equipment and guns, though, and that's the difference in perception.

I'll grant you that what you just said is a big part of this mindset, but versapak hit the nail on the head. The guitar hero guitar has five buttons. These 5 buttons create song after song and simply because it's shaped like a real guitar people assume you are wasting your time "learning the toy" when you can just as easily learn the real thing.
I'm convinced that a lot of folks are so ignorant to instruments that they really think you could learn guitar from Guitar Hero.
Plus, Madden may not be using football equipment... but plenty of games have add on peripherals without this reaction. If my friend is really good at Gran Turismo with his wheel, should I be making fun of him because he's not really racing around a mountain pass in a $200k car? Or if you are really good at Ace Combat with the flight controls, are you wasting your time by not flying fighter jets?
It's just a pet peeve of mine. I actually find it funny because it's just so strange that this one particular game has created this feeling where a lot of other peripheral games have not. Then again, not many games with specific controls have gotten as mainstream as this, so I guess it's to be expected.

I bet that's true. I agree with you for the most part on your frustration.

Hey, I learned how to dance from DDR, how to drive a car from Cruisin' USA, and how to box from Wii Sports, so I think Guitar Hero has taught me how to play the guitar. I just need to find a real guitar to prove it.*

Instead of playing Tomb Raider, I should go out and have sex.

I dont get the obsession with 5 gold starring everything, and I really dont understand some of the 360 achievements.
I play on medium and try to have fun, but I can honestly say I dont really like the set list that much

Save for a few stand-outs, I prefer the GH2 soundtrack myself. Hopefully there will be some good song packs out for GH3 though... even if I have to pay for them. The Foo Fighers and Velvet Revolver packs are a good start.

Funny, I thought GH2 had the worst soundtrack of all of the games. The order for me goes GH1, GH3, GH 80's encore, GH2
-
To be honest, I don't remember most of the GH1 soundtrack heh... haven't played in a while. I did like GH2 though, 80s was also very good.

Unlike Madden and CoD,etc - Guitar Hero is actually fairly representative of "rock guitar" playing. Tune down low E, then all you have to do is bridge all the strings to play a basic rock chord. Then playing a real guitar is EXACTLY like playing guitar hero. I remember when a friend first taught me how to retune to play bridge chords. I down tuned and played some deftones accurately. That was ---smurfing--- awesome! Then I spent alot of time retuning to play all kinds of somgs with a "single finger chord". It was heavy metal bliss I tell ya.
Having played real guitar (even though I'm nowhere near good) and GH, I find myself quitting after a song or two on GH and wanting to play my real guitar.
But hey, to each his own. The new Rock Band game is still hella gay though regardless. (I'm on a South Park binge - sue me! ;D)

That is still ridiculous.
That is no different than saying that pulling a trigger on your controller in CoD 4 is like pulling the trigger on a gun, so it is fairly representative of the real thing.
Just because it has similarities, doesn't make it at all realistic. Yeah, drop d tuning will open up some easy chording on a real guitar, but you are only going to be playing some basic stuff that way.

Where's Tommy when you need him? :dunno

I've always found that being a guitar player hinders my ability to play GH well. I enjoy GH quite a bit, but always struggle - even on songs that I can play all the way traditionally.

yeaj, iI can play the bass line for "My Name is Jonas" in real life. I have a tough time playing it in GH3. Part of it is on expert it uses all frets. In real like you drop D and you can play with just two fingers without moving them to different frets. So I switch to medium but then some of the patterns are simplified. There's a part that has syncipation int he real song but GH3 gives you eigth notes. I want to play the syncipation pattern when I get to that spot.
-
I finished GH3 on hard last week. IMO more difficult than GH2. It took quite a few tries at One before passing it. On expert I am stuck on a couple of songs. So I am currently going back and 5-starring medium to get some extra money.
I wish the boss battles weren't pure luck.
I may or may not get Rock Band. I don't see that as being as much fun as the GH series.
-
I cant wait to pass rock band on expert "playing" vocals

I can't believe I watched the whole thing. :dizzy:

Yeah.....good luck with that.
I think you would have more luck with Ms. Croft.

I've seen markrvp's wife. He should stay in and have sex.

They aren't pure luck.... here's how you play them....
First off, unlike the main game, getting more notes right than the other guy doesn't mean jack. You need to play well enough so that the song doesn't end, but no more. As a matter of fact, the ONLY time you need to play well is when an attack note is coming up, and then only until you get the note. The other key is to time when you attack. Do NOT throw it over as soon as you get it. What you do is watch your opponent and attack about three or 4 notes before their attack set comes up so that it is completely impossible for them to get their attack icon and attack back. If you play reasonably well and you keep attacking them before they can you'll win.

It is pure luck. Either you get the whammy and amp overload and win, or else don't get them and lose.
It's that simple.

I have to agree with Howard on this one. I got my butt kicked on them at first, but now I can win the final battle on hard and the battle against Slash on extreme almost every time, and the times that I lose are when I noticably screw up. And from what I've seen, the broken string is just as effective as the whammy one. Difficulty level up and double notes are probably the weakest two powerups, but it will still make them miss enough notes that they won't get their powerups.
