Title: Weird Problem, Change Resolution no Sound studder
Post by: Chunce DeLeone on November 01, 2007, 07:56:15 am
I am running MAME with a 27in TV via component dongle at 800X600 resolution, there is allot of sound studder, I changed the resolution in Windows and the ATI Catalyst to 640X480 and the Sound studder stopped,  Only thing is that there is a border around the screen which makes the veiwing area smaller and when I run games at native resolutions they are way too small, smaller than they should be or were with 800X600,  anyone know why the sound studder would clear up with the change in resolution?  Also I have gone into the service menu and I cannot strech the screen to a bigger size, I just get really bad bowing on the sides.

I have also had a lot of sound studder with MAME32 for no good reason.  Is this what you are referring to (MAME32) ?

It is my understanding (I could be so wrong it's embarrising) that MAME puts very little of the video processing on the video card, so the scaling is taking up processor power.  Even 640x480 is roughly doubling the pixles native to the image so the computer is still thinking about it.

Like I said, I may be wrong, but if I post here, I'll know to check back and see after I'm corrected.

I've noticed the same thing as well and was about to post what bfauska just said.  However, I just ran a test with Pacman at 1280x1024 vs 640x480 and the 1280x1024 was faster.  :dunno
Maybe it has more to do with scaling factors than the larger resolution?  Whatever is the cause, it's because MAME is working harder at 800x600 than 640x480 for that game (for whatever reason) which is causing the sound stutters.  You should check the frame rate in both resolutions using F11 to confirm.  Also try Direct3D vs Ddraw.  Is it just a few games?  Or all games?

I've been playing around and the lowest rez that fills the screen is 700X480,  no studder so I am going to stick with it,  I just never heard of anyone else using that rez with a TV,  its weird but seems to be working, however in mame the screen has a border around it, I want to force the rez in mame to 700X480,  where and what should I put into the mame.ini to make this happen?

If you want it that way for all games, put:
resolution   700x480
in mame.ini

I thought anything over 640X480 was not good on a standard tv?

Ahofle can I put that line anywhere in the mame.ini?

There's probably already a line in there for resolution (most likely set to auto).  Just replace it.
