I'm working on a cabinet that has a CP that won't alter the original cabinet. What does everyone think?
-
I guess that would depend on the cabinet that the panel is going on. Altered control panels (ones that are too big for the cabinet they are on), stick out like a sore thumb to me, but that is because I collect classic games in addition to mame cabinets.
Other people probably wouldn't notice.

Ah. It's going on a Moon Patrol.

How much of it is still a Moon Patrol? Does it still have the sideart? Marquee? Bezel? Control panel?

Still have the control panel, but had to replace the top, as it was completely swiss cheesed. It had been thru a number of conversions.
No marquee. The game was a poker game when I got it, but with no boards. The marquee in it was a game called 'D J Boy'
The bezel was painted over.
The sideart was also painted over, and I found it underneath. However, I've stripped it down to the wood. If needs be, it can be easily restripped and repainted, as Moon Patrol used stencils, not adhesive, to place side art.

Ok, so there wasn't much anything Moon Patrolly left to it. I feel a bit better about the new panel now.

Even if it had been mostly intact, what's not to feel good about? I've set aside the original CP, and would have taken the bezel and marquee off and stored them away if they were included. The side art can easily be replaced, if desired. It's not as if I hacked off the front, where the control panel does, like so many others.

I think it's a great idea, as long as you can fit the controls you want on your new control panel.
Personally, I don't think there was that much distinctive about the Moon Patrol cabinet that losing it to a MAME cab would have been that much of a loss. Still, I do think it's great that you are making the effort not to damage anything.
I did "chop" off part of the front of my Roadblasters cab to fit a SlikStik, so I'm guilty of MAME-ifying a cab. Of course, it was a stripped cab, with no sideart, boards, CP, bezel, or marquee. Basically a big wood box.
Do I sound like I'm rationalizing? ::)

Imagine your favorite car in the world. Now imagine that someone chopped off the front foot of it and built a new front out of wood. A new front that is a foot wider on either side and obviously doesn't match up with the rest of the car.
That is how I feel about classic cabinets with oversized control panels.

Imagine someone gets a junked classic car out of an auto graveyard and rebuilds it into a custom street rod.
If it can be restored as the original classic, that's the way to go. If it can't, build something new. In the end, beauty is in the eye of the cab owner. ;)
My personal opinion (as one of those dreaded "cab choppers" who wouldn't dare lay a hand on a Robotron or Tempest cab that could be restored...)

Duh, that's what I'm talking about. My control panel leaves the original untouched. All you have to do it bolt it back on. The one I'm building I don't have to modify the cabinet, it goes AROUND the cabinet to avoid the chop. Get it, or should I take a picture?
