Quick post to show off the Ms Pac-Man machine I just finished for my kids.
This was one rough cabinet when I found it. It had been converted to a Magic Sword and painted grey, lots of damage to the sides and corners.
But with a little love (and a lot of Bondo) I turned it into something I'm proud to have in our gameroom.
How it looked when I got it..

Damn where do you find the time for these awesome projects? Its not bad enough that you crank them out in a day or two, but they are also superior to 99% of everyone elses stuff!
-
my jealousy of your skills and attnetion to detail increases everyday
-
Awesome!
I know you've been trying to get one, so it's good to see it all come together for you. Great handiwork there too.
-
So is that stenciled, or a clear vinyl overlay?
-
so nice, it makes me want to throw up. Seriously man, it's beautiful.
(PS, my CP is still working like a champ...thanks again for hooking me up).

I totally agree! The craftsmanship is just amazing.
Is it a dedicated Ms. Pac or did you throw in a bunch of joystick only games?
-
:o
-
Thanks guys! The kids were playing it last night and loving it. :)
The side/front art are full pieces that include the blue areas. I just painted the entire cabinet blue because I wanted to make use of the can of paint I bought.
I'm running a 39-in-1 board, you can kinda see one of the menu screens in the first pic. Good selection of games and pretty much bullet-proof for the kids. ;)
I got the new bezel and marquee for it off ebay, they are both plexiglass and look great.
I altered the CPO to cover the entire CP, never liked that black section on the front. Lost the black kick-plate on the bottom too. Never liked it either but I understand how you would need it in an arcade setting.
-
Awesome. That artwork must have cost a pretty penny.
-
$145 Shipped :)
*PM me if you want info on where to get the artwork*
-
:banghead: Can't say I found a deal like that when I was shopping around for Ms Pac art. Nice job.
-
Knievl, this is getting boring. Isn't there ANYTHING you can screw-up ;) ;) ;)
That looks totaly fantastic. Better then Midway ever produced it !

YEP... totally agree. Very nice stuff... BUT I vote NO MORE PROJECT POSTS FROM KNIEVEL UNTIL HE SHOWS US A BIG GOOFY ERROR.
Of course if you seriously don't have any errors, I guess you can keep sharing, just don't expect us to believe you anymore. ;D
-
damn man.. makes me want to get a move on restoring my ms. pac.. someday.. somehow ill get around to it..
neil

$125 Shipped :)
Ahh you used my supplier as well! Nice work huh. I got the regular pac art from him.
-
Yes I assumed so after seeing you mention it in your thread. ;)
I actually bought mine some time ago.
He was only doing Ms Pac-Man then and was considering doing the regular Pac next.
Chad I thought I gave you his info back when you were looking??
-
Seriously nice work!! Damn you got skills.
Biggest mistake I ever made was looking at your projects. Now my dilusional expectations of my own work are set so high that I will never be satisfied with my own projects.....cause I'm just not nearly as good as you.
:notworthy:
you are a true artist
-
Thanks, I really can't take much credit for this one though. It is an original midway cabinet of course. :)
Guess I did make the CP myself, out of some 5/8" MDF.
I would like to thank whoever uploaded the Ms Pac-Man CP overlay to the AAL, I didn't recognize the name. Without it I wouldn't have been able to make my modified version.

When should I expect the cab to arrive ;D

Any chance of getting your modded version up on the AAL? I think I like it ALOT!!!!! Some much soo that I may shrewdly copy it (with permission of course). ;D
-
Wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww :o
probably the most beautiful Mrs pac-man ever
:notworthy:
-
Knievel, you suck. Will you please stop making such good cabinets?!!!!!
Just one question. I'm trying to judge how much you suck ;D
What was the amount of time it took to go from the crappy first pic to the glorious end product? Please say three years, and not three days / weeks ... please :P
-
So you wrap the artwork around the edge and trap it under the t-molding? Very nice.
-
That rocks hard ! :notworthy:

Incredible work!

What supplier? That art looks amazing.

My first reaction was i wanted to go home and burn all of my cabs. Then I wanted to find a new hobby, one that I would be good at. Now I feel like I've been getting my arse kicked by cobrai kai for 10 minutes and I need you to take me under your wing and show me how it's really done. How close are you to Massachusetts so I can learn from a true sensei.
-
Well..I'm just a *little* north of you. :)
I will attempt to upload the CPO to the AAL, never done it before though.
I've actually had this cabinet for almost a year. I was slowly gathering parts for it as the deals came up on eBay. It probably took a few days to actually put it all together, the repair work was time consuming.
Yes I wrapped the art around the edges and then ironed them down, with a small covering iron I had from my model airplane days. From what I've seen most people just cut the sideart flush with the edge. I think wrapping it around is cleaner and there's no chance of snagging it and pulling the artwork back.

Just curious about that covering iron thing... what does that do? Does it shrink the vinyl to fit around the edge?
I'm getting ready to wrap my steering control panel in fabric-backed vinyl to emulate a dashboard and wondering if this technique would work for me.
-
The iron shrinks it tight around the edge and makes the adhesive really bond.
My brother is building a Woody right now and we covered it with the Parts Express vinyl last weekend. He used the covering iron to seal all the edges and then went over the sides with a full-sized iron wrapped in a shirt.
The end result was the nicest finish I've ever seen on an arcade cabinet.

That's exactly the stuff I'm using. Never tried this before, though. I have a few questions if you don't mind sharing some tips:
1) What's a good adhesive to use with the Parts Express vinyl?
2) What did you do to wrap the corners to avoid the vinyl bunching up?
3) If the edges of the panel are hidden by the sides of the cabinet (i.e no T-molding), would you wrap the edges all the way to the back of the panel or still trim to the middle like you did with MsPac?
4) If you didn't have a covering iron, could you still pull this off with a standard iron and/or a soldering iron?
Thanks again!
-
Awesome work from the mighty K again! :applaud:
Thanks for the covering iron tip too, I will definitely be using that
-
Yup it works great.
Answers to Dmod's questions..
1) No extra adhesive, just peel and stick..then iron
2) I made relief cuts on the corners, plus the iron will smooth everything down
3) All the way to the back I suppose.
4) You could probably do it with a full-size iron, using the tip for most of it. A covering iron probably costs around $20 though.
BTW the Woody cabinet side is less than 24" wide so the parts express stuff worked without a seam.
If you've got a cabinet side wider than that you could go with Happ's Pica vinyl, it comes in a 48" width.
Of course it's a lot more expensive, but also a little nicer quality as well.
-
Go figure. You were into model aircraft (RC). Sounds like me. I still enjoy getting some flights at our local club and here behind the house.

-
Oh yea, big time. I'm still into it, just small electrics now though.
Being able to walk out into the yard and fly a plane was always a dream of mine. And new technology, mainly Li-Po batteries, has made it a reality.
I'll be buzzing the livingroom this winter with some real micro stuff.
This place is eating up a lot of my money these days :)..

That's all that I would fly around here...the electrics. My next project (started over a year ago!) that I'm finishing is an electric with my digital camera on board. I can't wait to see this place from the air. This plane flew only once and showed signs of instability (wing incidence or???). I didn't bother again flying it again. I did get some shots on the first flight (how brave of me). The plane is a scratch built plane called the Magpie.

Very cool. I'm not into scratch-building yet..maybe next year.
Nice flying field you've got there. :)

Did you close up those wingtips before you flew?
-
Nope...I've never closed a wing tip in on a straight wing. I don't expect much lift is lost if any at all. A straight wing produces (as far as I'm concerned) equal lift anywhere along the span. If it was tapered and drag was a consideration then yes. Sometimes drag add's lift. Here speed is not needed...just lift. I think in total the plane and camera all up weight was something like 42 ounces (just over 2.6 lbs). Wings like this are common amongst RC builders called 'SPADS' or Simple Plastic Airplane Design. I'm a Spadder. ;)

<-- Aerospace engineer... I would just think that the wingtip vortices would create some kind of interference there with the open tip. Hmm... I'll to look into that some more.
I work with jet engines, not wings...

:banghead:
Hey, Knievel .. how about you take a vacation around here next year ?
I'll entertain your family for a couple of days and show them the sights and you perform your magic on my Pac cab (which is still sitting there, unfinished, with sideart still in the shipping tube inside the cab) ? Oh, and if you have time, there's that touchscreen juke project sitting in a bin in my shop. And I was looking to replace the MAME cocktail at the cottage with a Woody clone.
The kids would love Wonderland !
Nice work, as usual.
:applaud:
-
Done. I sent the family..they should be arriving any minute now.
I'll be down in a month or 2. ;D
-
Is that Pink or Red T-Molding? It seems to match your pink paint and CPO/Bezel exactly so I'm inclined to think it's Pink, but it also looks reddish? Who was the vendor for the molding?
:dunno
-
Yup it's hot pink. Dream Arcades did a run of it awhile back, I believe they are the only ones that sell it.
I got if off one of their eBay auctions.
BTW I extended the t-mold slot on this cabinet to go right around the top/bottom.
So it has t-mold all the way around minus the door area at the back.
-
So where did u get the art from? I never saw a definate answer... I need to invest in some myself... Ms Pacman is my next project...
Thanks in advance!
-
WC...PM sent.

That is a simple light weight, electric R/C plane. Wing tips aren't critically necessary. It could get blown around the slightest bit in a cross wind, but not too bad.
I had one once upon a time that the design was basically a simple spar construction wing mount to a piece of 2" square stock pvc. Simple design, but that plane was very fast, responsive, and durable as all getout. "Real" engineering really isn't too important. ;D
In fact, the crap R/C planes and heli's can do would probably make alot of engineers heads explode due to all the physics laws they'd be breaking if they reacted like their big brothers. :laugh2:
-
Can an engineer actually think simple? Flame me if I'm wrong. These things break all the rules. It makes them simple and fun. ;)
Cornchip.
-
Well the smaller RC planes usually have a large thrust (or power) to weight ratio and it makes 'em behave differently. I've built RC planes... with a 12 foot wingspan, so you have to worry about wingtips, wing incidence, etc.
-
Amazing work (as always.) Can you please foward me art work contact info as I have a rally X cabinet I wish to convert? Much appreciated.
-
Wow, that cab looks PERFECT!
Great work man!
-
Thanks! The kids are still loving it. :)
I've since swapped the 39-in-1 board out for a 48-in-1 and replaced the 25 cent coin door inserts with some new repro ones.
Looking at replacing the PC monitor with an actual arcade monitor in the near future too.
-
This is very similar to what I want to do for my next cabinet build. I have a small 10x10 room in my shop that I want to convert into a mini-Arcade/Man-Cave and I'm going to fill it with a mame cabinet and 1 or 2 classic games built from scratch. The Ms Pac Man looks like it would be a good candidate for this. Where did you get the side art and do you remember the shade of blue paint you used? This is a GREAT build, bravo.
-
Check out this NIB Ms Pacman
Anyone seen the white trim work on the sideart like that before?
http://www.basementarcade.com/arcade/mspacman/tlnmpm/page2.html (http://www.basementarcade.com/arcade/mspacman/tlnmpm/page2.html)
-
Wow!
So many different things. There is white all over that artwork!
Lucky sod!
-
Yes, that NIB unit has the OEM sticker sideart that replaced the stenciled versions when Midway was winding down production of Ms. Pac-man.
That sticker sideart has numerous differences from the stencil painted version everyone is familiar with: The white outline around the perimeter of the stickers, the different ghosts especially with the white highlighting, more vibrant colors, and the black outlining around the stripes. etc.
-
Ah, hadn't seen a sticker version before.
-
I have been in need of the Pac art for soooooo long. I could never get a reply to my emails.
Anyone have a set of the Pac art? Or help get me in the right direction?
Definately appreciated! Finishing my cab might help me forget the recent basement flooding. :'(
