Title: What's the best DS "modchip"
Post by: shmokes on October 27, 2007, 01:45:17 pm
I know that it's not a modchip per se, but what's best out there right now?

R4DS is what I and everyone I know personally uses.  Never heard of a single problem that wasn't solved with a firmware update that was available before I encountered the problem in the first place.
[/original post]

As you can see, I originally posted my opinion on the single card that I have experience with as did everyone else in this topic...  Obviously your question isn't getting answered in this fashion so I found this http://gbatemp.net/index.php?dynamic=39 which should be of some assistance.

P.S.
The comparison chart reminds me of all the reasons I chose the R4.  Frequent FW updates, Passme feature (for using slot 2 devices), DLDI support (for homebrew), Soft Reset (L,R,A,B,X,Y) and the skinnable OS (which is super easy to make skins for and you can have 12 loaded on the cart to be cycled with the months or selected to stay until you change it.)

I love the R4 as well... Never had a problem with it at all.  I also have a G6 Lite which is an older Slot 2 card and it works great as well.  I'd get a Slot 1 solution if you're buying something today though.

I use the DS supercard and could not be more happy.

Before I bought my cyclods evo, I read several head to head reviews that basically said the cyclods, and the other top name ds cards are about the same at this point, but team cyclops offers the best, and quickest, customer support. The only real problem with the cyclods is it is hard to find in stock. ;D

Great, thanks.  It's for my brother, actually.  I don't even own a DS.  That chart is great, crash.  Thanks.

Well, I am going to have to retract my endorsement of the cyclods. Ours crapped out today. I was pretty ticked off, and figured maybe the wife screwed it up because I had noticed she had the card out Last night to play a retail Brain Age 2.

After logging on to Team Cyclops forums, I was not amused at the things I was reading. First off, the makers have had paid contracts out for 9 weeks without shipping anything to their buyers. I'm talking larger quantity dealer orders. Then, the forums shut down for a few days unannounced, the team stops answering inquiries, etc. Everyone thought they had been duped, or that they were raided. They come back finally and promise yet again they are hard at work getting their shipments out.
And to the main reason I logged on, there is apparently a large number of CycloDS's out that are either bad right out of the box, or quit at about the month mark. Guess what? Mine quit at about the month mark.
Supposedly, they replace defective units, but at my cost to ship to them of course.  We shall see - I have an email in to them per their instructions.

If she can break that the problem may lie more on you than her, bro.   :)

Klutzy wife, eh?  I'm right there with you.

I should take a picture of her legs for you. She has so many bruises from bumping into stuff, dropping stuff, etc that she looks like a "desperate for a vein" junkie. ;D

Heh.  My wife is the same way, plus added bruises because she works with problem preschoolers that like to kick, punch, bite, spit... we've long since given up on the "where did that bruise come from" game.

She tends to be bruised up enough sometimes that I've always wondered if people look at her and decide it's me putting them there.   :banghead:

I have an R4, Cyclo DS and M3 Simply.  They are all almost identical in my opinion.  They all work great.
I also have an M3 Lite.  Works but the conversion is annoying, don't get that unless you really want to play GBA games too.

Nothing wrong with a little discipline, now get her in the kitchen and make you a sandwich.

I'd have to tell her to come home from work to do that.  Money > sammich.

Thinking about getting a G6 DS Real.  Looks like I can use the reader to copy the game to the flash card.  Spouse has a couple of games (like Mario Kart) that are 1player and I don't want to screw up the saved games.

I've got an R4 and a CycloDS.  Both work great.  Personally, I think I prefer the CycloDS on a DS with flashed firmware.

Only problem I've had is that I had to use the SuperCard software for certain things (Cyclo is a SuperCard clone)

R4 has been flawless

Shardian's CycloDS Evo is a slot-1 solution and very different from the Supercard clone (Slot-2) that you and I own.  CycloDS has pretty never done a firmware update for our Slot-2 devices.  Mainly for that reason and the fact that so many GBA games run like crap and/or simply don't save (at least for me  ::) ) on the Slot-2 Cyclo, I wouldn't recommend anything by the Cyclo team to anyone.

I have two R4's and they are great.  The spring that holds the MicroSD in place does seem finicky and weak, though.

The Cyclo team has been acting like Slik Stik for the past few weeks. Somehow, mine started working again, but it sometimes isn't recognized by the ds until I pop it in and out a few times. It is NES cart crapshoot all over again. ;)

I jsut got an R4 this week and it seems that they've changed the MicroSD slot.  There's no more spring loading to it, just push/pull.

Any recommended R4 vendors for the US?  My brother's girlfriend is getting him one for Christmas and she doesn't want to talk to him about it.

Here's another review link.  Warning: it is a little slow to load even on basic DSL.

They also reviewed most carts (but they don't date the reviews).

I just ordered the DSTT and the EWIN expander for GBA games.
