Title: Using a DIY touchscreen panel?? Anyone done this??
Post by: electricd on October 24, 2007, 10:50:42 am
Hello,

I am thinking of finally creating my own jukebox (already made 3 mame machines), but I want to make it a headless system and use a touchscreen.  Problem is I dont have $500 for a screen!  I have a brand new Dell 19" LCD, and have found some "solutions" on ebay that allow you to add a touchscreen layer to any LCD for around $150.  Has anyone tried this?  I am wondering how it works, and if the results were favorable.  Thanks for any and all advice!

I do not have any advice to give you with respect to turning your existing monitor into a touchscreen by adding on hardware, however, I wanted to let you know I got my 18" ELO flat panel touchscreen shipped for $200 from Ebay, however, I think that was good timing.  Point is, you definitely can find one much cheaper than $500 if you keep watching.

Also, you might want to look at this thread .....

Here is a brand new ELO 17" CRT touchscreen for $250.00

PS: I am assuming your meant "handless system" and not "headless system"   :P

Hehe thanks, and yea I meant "handless".  I guess that link for the 15" isn't a bad deal.  I really want to keep it small anyway, so that might work out well.  Basically just a monitor with a couple of flush mounted speakers below it in a small wall-mountable box.  Maybe a 19" is a little overkill?

If your jukebox was a "video" jukebox then perhaps a 19" touchscreen would be nice, however, if you are going to simply select MP3 titles and listen to the songs out of speakers, I would choose to spend my money on a small touchscreen.    It is all about what you want out of your project though I guess ..... good luck.

A good 15 inch touch is fine for a juke.   You can probably get one for alot cheaper then using an add on touch screen.  The add ons are never very cheap.

If you really want to splurge, get the 15" touch as well as the 19".  There are some jukebox software programs setup to use dual monitors that can split the images.

But I would say get the 15" touch and save the 19" for something else.  The 15" elo is really nice, have one myself, and it is decased and ready for a jukebox.

Offer them 125 and they will accept it and you have a 15 touchscreen right away.  Doesn't come with the casing but you don't need it anyway.  I've ordered 3 from them already.

I have bought one of those 19" touchscreen add on kits, and it worked like a champ.  I actually cracked it while making the enclosure for it.  I just ordered another one, but not because the first one didn't do its job. :)
