Title: Scored two free cabs
Post by: SavannahLion on October 20, 2007, 10:55:54 pm
At the risk of life and limb with my GF I picked up two seriously waterlogged cabs today for free.

These machines were broken in to so the guy left three cabs outside in the rain. I had my choice between Puzzle Fighter Turbo, Raiden II and Monster Mauler. Of the three, PFT was missing the monitor. The water damage is severe. My hand literally goes through the soft particle board. The back of my truck has at least a pound of disintegrated particle board.

I decided to snag the MM and PFT and leave the RII for someone else. To boot, I was allowed to scavenge some monitors from his storage. Selected four, but by the time I dragged two of the monitors uphill, I was ---smurfing--- beat. I think they're 19" or 21" monitors. Most likely WG monitors. I spotted a small monitor labeled as a Midway, but I was just too ---smurfing--- beat to drag it up the hill. I had selected another 25"(?) but when I brought it out into the light, I noticed the neck pins were mangled.

So I made off with a Monster Maulers (http://klov.com/game_detail.php?game_id=8741) and Puzzle Fighter II Turbo (http://klov.com/game_detail.php?game_id=9931). As well as a total of three monitors.

The cabinets are the "Z" style with the funky cut corner SFII CP. Unfortunately, while I was unloading the MM cab, it slipped off the truck and smashed on the ground. The coin door internals shattered (just as well, it needed repairs anyways), the CP has a small unwanted bend (hopefully I can hammer it out) and the monitor, paper bezel and glass popped out.  :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

I thought I lost the monitor, originally why I wanted it, but it looks like it survived well. The wood supports in the cabinet are going to need repairs though.

I don't think I'll salvage these Z's though. Every major panel has major water damage. I would have to strip the cabinets all the way down and recut entirely new panels for them. With that much work, I might as well build them from scratch.

I can go back and get some additional arcade parts, buttons, boards, etc. Enough stuff that I can really jump start my Hang On project. But if I do that, I might lose my GF.  Oh well. I'll call him tomorrow and make arrangments.

Depends on why you're asking.  ;D

Wondering if it was from the shop near the radio tower.  On a side topic, did you keep the Z-cab?  I have a Z-cab street fighter layout cp that (maybe soon) I am planning to sell.  If I can keep it local, cool.

Yeah, it was near Sac, but I don't think it was near any radio tower. It was from a guy who is ending his circuit locally.

The Z's are unsalvageable as they are now. All the major panels have severe water damage. One of the Z's is practically falling apart only exasperated when I dropped it from the back of the truck. I'm still annoyed at the damage to the coin mech I did. The other has some strange repairs the water damage seem to make worse.

I am, however, stripping these cabs all the way down. Salvage what I can and giving consideration to building my own Z cab with some design improvements. It's something to think about, but I'm kind of undecided about it.

I have a z-cab with a 25" monitor and I really like it's shape...The monitor angle, marquee height etc...

Only drawback is lack of usable space inside.  I have two jamma boards instaled in mine and it's a tight fit.  Some days I eye all the unused space at the bottom of the cab, but as it stands there isn't a convenient way to use it.  (without mods).

I've considered using this cab as a model to build my own but without the "z".  Sad really but just for the room.  Oh...and the z makes the cab a snap to load into and out of a pickup...(it just does)
