Title: Adding hard drive to modded PS2 question
Post by: JMB on October 19, 2007, 01:50:42 pm
I have an old PS2 with a Messiah 2 Pro chip installed.  Since I have a bunch of old drives kicking around I figured I would pick up a network adapter and throw one in the PS2.  Are there any problems trying to use the drive with a mod chip installed?

Thanks!

As long as it can support some form of OS that can play games, it will be fine.

I have the DMS4 in mine running Toxic OS.  Games load really fast and play great off the drive.

google 'hdadvance' and that will lead you in the right direction. I have a Matrix Infinity and can boot hdadvance by pressing L1 when turning on the PS2. You may or may not be able to do that depending on the features of your modchip.

No you can get away with using a Swapmagic disk (3.6 i think) and burning a hdadvance disk.

Actually while im here i have a question.  Has anyone here used a HD with the slim ps2 after installing the hardware that lets you use an ide port?  I havent checked in a while and was just wondering how easy they are to install compared to a chip.  thanks.

So Swapmagic can not be a back-up?

Nope has to be the store bought disc.

I was just checking out the HD combo and HD connect and im really thinking of getting the former.  I cant solder very well but i have a friend that might be able to help me with that.  Has anyone here used the HD combo before or know someone who has?  Thanks.

I just installed a HDconnect on my v12 slim. I believe the soldering will be identical for the HD combo - the main difference the combo comes with a replacement case for the slim...

If you are not happy with soldering, definately get some help. It's not as hard as a ps2 modchip as (at least with the HDconnect) you get ribbon cable that is shaped correctly to be soldered directly to the pcb.

I was surprised modding the ps2 slim - I've modded xbox, Gamecube, Wii, N64 etc... PS2 (slim) was far and away the hardest - lots of VERY small solder points. I assume a regular ps2 is easier but never opened one.

Also dissapointed to discover some HD's simply do not work - mainly WD it seems - completely not detected. Very fustrating.
