Title: T-molding in the UK?
Post by: councilface on October 13, 2007, 02:26:44 pm
Any brits know where to get standard 3/4" T-mold (3/4" x 0.1" x 1/4)? Theres a chap on e-bay but it looks a bit pricey to me (£15 for 20'). Is this the going rate?

Cheers.

just looked at a german site , its about a quid a metre on there not sure bout postage costs, or if we have to pay import duty from europe, but the ebay one seems expensive in comparison.

arcadeshop (http://www.arcadeshop.de/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=t+mold)

I thought it seemed a bit much for what it is. Im on the Norfolk/Suffolk border. My broad is a septic that has a PO Box on the local airbase. I may just get some american stuff sent there ;o)

I will check out the german site though. Cheers!

Why not simply order in the US ? With current dollar-euro, I beg your pardon, pound rate it's a lot cheaper than the e-bay guy....

www.t-molding.com has 20' black for $7,40, shipping $11,40, total $18,80=UKP 9,24

Not sure about the UK, but anything below a value of €22,- is tax and import duty free. Further, if you can ask the seller/sender to send it as a gift or sample, you get little problems.....don't let them include a bill in that case !

I've never had any problems except once, an order from arcadeshop, but that included a bill AND the full value was stated on the customs note.... :banghead:

I thought it was a bit pricey too, but I have no idea where to go for it.

Any additional vendors would be much appreciated!

I'm in Scotland and I've bought T-Molding twice from the US and had no problems or tax ,
I would recomend T-molding.com as the price is great , delivery was fast and also they do the slot cutter half the price I could find it in the UK ,I also used Dreamarcades and had no problem .I also looked at the UK ebay dude , too pricey .
When I was looking to buy I was also looking to buy UK ( thought it would be easier )but it's so easy to buy from the US ( or anywhere now) , once you order let the post do the rest

I can vouch for t-moulding.com, I had some chrome 3/4" delivered from them (fits 18mm MDF etc a treat) and it was delivered superfast and was fairly cheap and I paid no import taxes etc.

Try and get a price from divemaster127 though, I know he stocks some t-moulding and i imagine he would be able to ship it competitively and I imagine would mark it as a sample etc too. Support the BYOAC community if you can ;)

Yep go with t-molding.com. I'm in Leeds and have bought from them twice, the first time they sent me some free samples to make sure the size and colour (or color) were what I wanted. And I've never had to pay customs tax either.

In fact the only time I've been hit with extra tax was with an order from playasia.com - made it not worth it in the end :(

I searched and searched for ages for a good uk supplier but gave up - so do the right thing and order from t-molding.com !

I have 18mm plywood for my cab's sides (seems to be std width in the uk)... this is about 0.71 inches, and is somewhere between 5/8" and 3/4"...

Anyone know where I can get t-molding at this width?

Thanks!

3/4" T-molding works fine on 18mm Timber... You're only talking 4 hundredths of an inch difference. That's in fact a smaller difference that the tollerance on the manufactured timber or on the T-molding. I always use 3/4" and have no problems with it.

If anybody needs the slot-cutter router bit for t-molding, then I have one - only used once.

Make me an offer!

Thanks!  I also sent an email to t-molding.com.  They too suggested the 3/4" size, but recommended I trim it to fit after installing (not sure how difficult that would be - has anyone successfully trimmed t-molding once fitted?).  3/4" works out at 19mm so that's .5 mm to trim each side.

They also said they sell 11/16" (17.5mm) t-molding, but only in BLACK.  If I choose black this would probably be the better option, as I reckon the .25mm gap each side would be hardly noticable, especially if I paint the edge of the wood black to match.

No mate!! Use the 3/4" ...... You'll find it's as good a fit as you'll get. Going smaller than the timber size is a bad idea. The T-Molding is there to protect the edges as well as to look good. If you go smaller it's easier to chip bits out of the timber.

Trimming T-Molding is possible... I've done it a couple of times. You get a new sharp Stanley Knife blade and let it sit flat against the surface of the cabinet, then run it down the T-Molding. It takes practice to get the technique right. so try it out on some scrap first.

That said, I think you're going to find that 3/4" T-Molding doesn't need trimming once it's in place. It will look exactly right. Like I said you're working out tolerances that are smaller than the tolerances in the timber and the T-molding. Trust me on this one 3/4" will fit fine.

Best Regards,
Julian (Fozzy The Bear)
