Title: Basement finishing advice
Post by: ChadTower on October 03, 2007, 03:13:51 pm

I'm about to frame the first wall along the inside of the foundation.  This is one I'll probably frame, have an electrician come in and set up with two circuits, and then leave open for the forseeable future.  I mostly want the two quality grounded circuits but I figure rather than have them attach them to the foundation, I'll frame the wall, since eventually I'll finish it.

Here is the question.  This wall is parallel to the joists so I'll have to put in some perpendicular 2x4 pieces between the outermost joist and the sill plate so the top plate has something to attach on.  There is fiberglass insulation between the joists.  Should I remove the insulation or just push it up some so there is room for the perpendicular blocking?

This is a good pic of the scenario, only my joists are 2x8s.

Just push the insulation up.

Just push the insulation up.

Ditto.  The only reasons I would remove are if you are installing a non IC recessed lighting fixture or if it just falls out on its own.  If it falls out, put it back, or better yet replace it with some higher R value stuff.

The builder of our house framed the exterior walls of the basement and as you described, he pushed the insulation up.  I didn't realize how much was up there until I had a pipe freeze and I had to pull all the wet (and heavy) insulation out.

Since this is just on the edge of the basement ceiling, odds are no lighting will go between the edge joist and the foundation.  Good point, though.

I'll push the insulation up.  Thanks, guys.

'nother tip...dont put the blocking in place until after you build the wall.  Stick build the wall lying flat on the ground, then raise it into place.  Have a helper hold the wall while you go along and install the blocking and secure the wall to the blocking.

MUCH easier than building the wall in place, or raising a wall into a snug fit.

Wish I could but there isn't nearly enough floor space to do that.
