OK, here is my question.
I have an i-pac hooked up to 2- 8 way joysticks and the 2-6 button configurations, street fighter style setup for my mame cabinet. I am running Mame32 version .59 and the question I have is how do I map the buttons so that they are set up in the manner I want them. They are 1 2 3 across the top and 4 5 6 on the bottom. Mame 32 configures them in this manner for Mortal Kombat.
Right now they are:
Button 1: High Kick
Button 2: High Punch
Button 3: Block
Button 4: Low Punch
Button 5: Low Kick
Button 6: Does nothing
What I would like is:
Button 1: High Punch
Button 2: Block
Button 3: High Kick
Button 4: Low Punch
Button 5: run (for MK3 and above)
Button 6: Low Kick
Every time I try and switch these around I seem to have some sort of ghosting problem or something and I can never get them right. Once I screw them up, I don't know how to get them back to Mame's original setting either? Then most of the buttons do not work properly for Mortal Kombat and I get rather upset. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

i remember getting super pissed when i was configuring my MK controls, my mistake was pausing the game, then setting the controls, when i left the game running, it worked out and i was kicking ass in no time. just my $0.02

I just did this the other day, so it was good timeing for your question! :)
What you need to do is hit tab and then change the controls JUST FOR THE GAME your in. Also, after you have made your changes, make sure that you scroll down the complete list of controls and make sure no other keys are assigned to one you've already used. the big problem i was having, was that i used the number 9 key for my high kick i believe and that key was also used for the SERVICE button. I just made the service button have a different assigned key that wasn't being used by any other keys.
Hope this helps and good luck.

I've had problems setting up MK also, but the player 2 side was easy to do for some reason.
I however have a problem with doing the 3 button moves (low punch, block, low kick (+ joystick move for ninjas)) it doesnt seem to work. I can sometimes do it if I pull out the keyboard, but not on my control panel. All the buttons work ok by themselves, and are wired to an ipac, everything else seems to work ok except for these types of moves which make it tought to play lots of the character because you cant use some of the more useful moves. Anyone else have this problem?

I'm having the same problem with Mortal Kombat. I try to configure just the games' keys so that high punch/kick is at the top, and low punch/kick is at the bottom. When I try to set the LEFT Ctrl, Alt, and Shift keys, it sets it for both left AND right Ctrl/Alt/Shift. Is there any way to change this so that LEFT and RIGHT Ctrl/Alt/Shift keys are seperate from each other?

I've gotten the left shift + right shift thing many times as well. I'm using win XP, and what fixes it is to enable sticky keys, go into the game, set the right buttons, then exit and disable sticky keys. You can access sticky keys in control panel/ accessibility.

the left AND right shift problem, or left AND right CTRL problem, comes from pausing the game just like i explained. well thats the exact problem i had a t least.

All I have to say is this message forum kicks ass. If anyone is running Mame 32 with the previous suggestions above, this is what I did and it worked awesome for me. I put it on 2 player and got both players going on the screen. I then hit the tab button and began configuring the buttons, it worked like a charm. Like it says above, do NOT put the game on pause, for some reason this screws the configuration up, just keep the game running. BTW for those having a problem with the player 1 block button, in the menu, for some reason the player 1 button 3 is listed 2 times. You have to change both of them to the same button that you want. Now I am set up perfectly. Thanks for everyone's help.
Button 1: High Punch
Button 2: Block
Button 3: Hich Kick
Button 4: Low Punch
Button 5: Run
Button 6: Low Kick

well I have to agree this board is very helpful. That sticky key thing worked but what a pain . Just don't pause huh? How simple. Someone shold report that as a bug to the developers.

its kinda weird and it drove me nuts for days cause i couldnt play kombat and didnt even think to ask how to fix it, just thought it was a wiring issue then realized it only did it for the MK's. dosent make any sense to me. ??? ;)

Two words: use the ctrlr ini files instead. (so I can't count :P )
Info in your mame docs/ctrlr.txt and http://www.mameworld.net/easyemu/mamecontrolini.htm

What he said... as a matter of fact unless it uses analog controls (and sometimes even if it does) ALWAYS use the ctrlr files.... you only have to do it once afterall. :)
