Title: having trouble with a modded xbox
Post by: TheRed on September 22, 2007, 07:42:49 pm
Well, first of all I'd like to say I don't know ANYTHING about modding xbox's. I had this done for me and the xbox worked and one day the chip wasn't working. I sent it back to the guy that modded it the first time for me to fix and do a couple of things to it...

What I asked for was that it boot up when power is sent to the cord so I can put it in a cab and not have to open the cab to turn on the xbox.

Well, I finally got it back today and popped it in the cab...it turns on and the front light goes on, but then the thing cuts off and the light starts blinking. and nothing is on the screen...the power continues to cut in and out with the light blinking when it's on.

Any ideas?

thanks

Sounds like you should send it back to the guy.

If that's not possible - a few pics of the guts might help us to support you.

Cheers,
Craig

I'd never send it back...took too long the first time, lol. For some reason, when the xbox is level, it works 100%...but if I have it in the cab on it's side...it's doesn't boot up. Weird....

When you say the light is flashing, does it happen to be alternating between red and green?  It sounds to me like the chip's connection to the LPC port is loose.  It's losing contact when you turn it on its side.  No way to fix it aside from going in there and wiggling it into place if it's a solderless chip, which is actually pretty likely from the sound of things, and then hot-glue everything so it stops moving around.  If it's a solder-job, it needs to be redone, or at least touched up.  It sounds like you're definitely not going to be doing that.  If you don't want to open the thing up and mess with the innards your only two options are to keep it level (though this is not a permanent option -- even this is only going to continue working for a short time), or send it back to the guy (or someone else who knows what's what with Xbox mod chips).  Sorry.

A simple flashing red and green (FRAG) could be a number of things, but if it's cutting power twice, and restarting twice... then FRAG'ing, its almost definitely a short.

Check the LPC like shmokes said, or it is often a short on the d0 point.  The 3 reset/FRAG is fairly common, and is definitely fixable.  You're just going to have to find someone who knows what they are doing.

I figure I can open it and see. I am not afraid, lol...I've built superguns and rewired arcade cabinets. I figure I can resolder something inside an xbox, but if I can just push in a cable, that would be better, lol. I don't know how small these points are though. I just don't want to mess anything up, as I am not even sure what it looks like in there. It's an xecutor 2 chip...at least that's what the boot up screen says. Also, the light is purple and it just flashes purple when it's on it's side.  It use to go green when I first had it and would just tap the power button, then hold it to boot up to the chip, but I asked him to just make it so it booted straight to the chip when power went to the cord.

any other ideas with this info, or does it still look like the same issue? Is it a soldering fix?

oh, and THANKS FOR THE ADVICE/HELP!! :)

you need to find out what colors are flashing.

if it has a green led and a added purple that took over the red and it is only blinking purple now wich would be red if stock and if red is the only thing flashing the motherboard is no good more then likely and could be many things that went bad.

No . . . Xecutor 2 is just the BIOS that's loaded to the chip.  The chip could be something completely different (I know that Xeniums have a multi-colored LED on them and purple is a selectable color).  My guess is that you've got a Xenium SpICE solderless chip and it's the solderless business that's giving you grief as far as keeping the LPC port aligned.  If that's the case, you'll just want to adjust it by manually wiggling it around and then testing and wiggling and testing until it's got a good, solid, connection, tighten down the screw, then test it again, and then put hot glue on each of the wires, and around the little thing with the pogopins that attaches to the LPC port.  Of all the Xbox mods I've done, I've had the same success with a hot-glued solderless chip as with a soldered chip (which is to say 100%).

One more thing, though, what is the light on the front of the Xbox doing?  That light cannot go purple (unless it's been replaced with a new LED).  It can be red, orange or green.  Without knowing specifically what chip you have in there, the light on the front of the Xbox (the ring-shaped light that surrounds the eject button) is much more important than the LED on the modchip itself.

I was understanding that the front indicator light was modded with a purple led in place of the stock red.

also the x2's I thought had a red and blue led to show if the chip is in flash protect mode or not.

the xeniums had the green yellow purple etc. to choose from but not the x2's or x3's unless you meant the external switch for the xecuters there blue red and purple.
