I suspect it's just a hoax or made up news item.  There have been a hundred identical "stories" floating around the net for years.

Jimmy covered it?  Didn't Rupert Holmes do the original?

Could be Jimmy never sang it, I haven't heard the song in years and I just remembered it as a Jimmy Buffet song.

I don't know about Jimmy Buffet covering it, but it was definitely written/sung by Rupert Holmes.

The full title is: Escape (The Pina Colada Song) (http://www.lyrics007.com/Rupert%20Holmes%20Lyrics/Escape%20(The%20Pina%20Colada%20Song)%20Lyrics.html) by Rupert Holmes

I listened to a clip of the song on Amazon and the Rupert Holmes version is the one I was thinking of.

That does sound like your typical annoying Jimmy Buffet song.
