Thanks, but I heard these guys are involved in some kind of article-stealing conspiracy. >:D

Its not the greatest magazine, but its good enough to read while on the can.  My last free subscription just ran out a few months ago, so this is excellent timing   :)

Thanks for the heads up.

They offer this every few months or so... I've been a free subsciber to EGM for years.  I barely ever actually read it but it does come every month.

I got it when I was a kid, back when they did plenty of arcade coverage in the MK/SF era. They were THE magazine to go to for news/rumors/unveilings/cheats/codes for arcade goodness...oh and those console things too. ;D

Yeah, I got the free subscription last year... called up and canceled it after about 6 months.  :dunno

EGM blows...but for free,  who can complain?

CGM is now Games for Windows Magazine and sucks even more than it did when it was CGM.  Now they even include a 8-10 page suckfest "advertorial" about how wonderful Vista is, etc...from Microsoft.

That said,  my PCGAMER magazine,  a staple of my life...has become pretty craptastic as of late as well.  Now they keep shoving a mini-CELLPHONE magazine inside of the real magazine called "CELL PLAY".  I don't give a ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- about cell phones...why are you wasting magazine space for that crap?  Oh...is it because they couldn't sell enough advertising to warrant even a 50 page magazine?   What happened to the good ole' days of 100 pages an issue?

I've been thinking the same thing.  I've read PC Gamer for 10-15 years and the past few have been crap.  I still have over a year left on my subscription, so maybe they'll turn the magazine around before it runs out, but I'll probably just let it expire.  And those ad sections you mention (which I hate) are not in every magazine, just in every 3rd or 4th one, not that it makes it any better.

The innernets happened to magazines.  Why pay for a 100 page magazine when you can get all the same info for free without the restrictions of print material?

I started w/ PC Gamer in 95.  Gave it up last year.  They really haven't done much lately.  And Maximum PC is about the same now.  About all they do now is recycle old articles... What tools you need in toolbox, how to build a pc at home, how to play in the registry...  Only saving grace there is a one year renewal is only $12 so its hard to beat $1 an issue.

Yup, its actually gotten a little better this past year (two years ago when they rearranged the layout it was a disaster, so they switched back after a year).  They need to put the Vede back into the hardstuff section and get a new editor-in-chief because it was shortly after he was promoted that the mag. started becoming crap.  I actually have no idea how long I've been reading it, I just know I was reading it early in highschool which puts it at 10+ years ago.

10+ years is about when it started so I was one or two issues behind you.

Least they got rid of the moron who "yelled" at people and had the windows tricks.  That was just stupid.

Sweet -

Not only do we have more McDonalds per capita, superior language skills, and the love of the global community - we now have free magazine subscriptions. God Bless America!

This is the ironic part...

...the restrictions of the COMPUTER are what prevents me from reading online stuff while on the CAN!  I already TRIED to convince the wife we needed a computer at the John...ain't gunna happen...hence the continual and forever need for PRINTED PUBLICATIONS damnit!

Those dumbasses actually ran the SAME ARTICLE TWICE a few issues back and left out a Quake Arena article.  Now I work for a magazine and ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- happens...but I have NEVER seen an article repeated twice in the same magazine.  Where are their proofers?

It was an Enemy Territory: Quake Wars article that was left out.  I'm huge fan of the original Enemy Territory so it did piss me off quite a bit, but at least I got to read the article on their website and the next month they had a multiple page article on the game to try and make up for it.  I remember another time where they had a promotional code for some game (I forget which game) that gave you some unique pet or item or something, except the code got messed up in every magazine so you couldn't read it and they had to run the same thing again the following month.

Restrictions... bah... get a tablet PC with a wireless nic and mount it to the wall right next to the toilet.  It's only natural.

I too have been a longtime PCGAMER reader...This second layout change is better than the last one but I still prefer the original format...y'know where you can find stuff...

Anyway it's been sad to see it slim down but the quality is recovering from last year's ho-hum fare.  And while I liked the Vede in hardstuff and Q n A, he's not been a great EIC. That said He's left the mag for some undisclosed Corporate job.  So we'll see what comes next.

I read it in the can too, and for what it's worth I'd rather have a printed mag there than any sort of electronic device.
