Title: 3 Months, US$450 later... The University of Wisconsin MAME
Post by: Ha1eX on September 19, 2007, 11:24:27 am
It took longer than I anticipated, cost more than I budgeted and was more difficult then I imagined.  Sounds alot like my job at work....

The University of Wisconsin MAME cabinet is finally finished!  I decided to use the Red and White theme from my alma mater, UW.

Here are some specs:
1 GHz Athlon, 384MB memory, 40GB harddrive, ATI Radeon 9200
3/4" particle board construction
27" Sanyo flat tube television
Groovygamegear KeyWiz MAX PS/2 interface
USB red translucent trackball

Of course, I'm running MAME 0.113, and Nestopia with a Mala front-end.

I plan on adding z26 and ZSNES soon...

I like everything about it except that marquee.  You obviously have some skill in photoshop or know someone by the looks of that CPO.  Why not have a comparable marquee to complete the theme.  Personally I would prefer maroon and white, gigem, but go with what you love.

Its not like you need to call it a mame cabinet.  To 99.99999% of the world, that means absolutely nothing.  If anyone wonders how you did it, just say its technical.

I concur, the marquee kind of detracts from the whole look of the cabinet. Otherwise, it looks very good.

I'm not a personal big fan of "plain" cabinet artwork. Whomever did the CP artwork ought to go in, vectorize that mascot, then blow it up so it really pops out on that cabinet. Failing that, do something on that front panel. My eye keeps looking at that and expecting something there. Usually it's a coin mech, but with yours you could do anything you desired.

I agree with the previous 2 posterss, randy sells the fake coin door sticker. Still an amazing cabinet consider the budget and time frame. its better then mine thats nearing the $1000 mark / 5 year mark

Well that makes two university themed cabs.  Maybe I should get my Iowa Hawkeyes cab started...

How does the university deal with legal issues (use of roms without owning the original PCBs)?

I highly doubt a university of that size would give money for this or much less care what is running on it.  Also there was this that tipped me off he is an alum.

Is this a sincere question?  My understanding of the copyright law is that as long as I'm using the logo for personal use only, I'm free to do as I please with it inside my home.  I like the cabinet.  Nothing wrong with rooting for the 3rd best team in the big ten. ;)  Anyways, I agree with the first two guys and congratulate you on keeping the cost within a reasonable amount.

Allow me to clarify the intent and usage of this project.  The University in no way sponsored or supported this project.  I am in no way affiliated with the University, nor am I dealing in any type of publicity or promotions relating to the University.  I am a private citizen, who constructed the machine for private use in my private home, using decals purchased from licensed vendors.  At no time have I or will I realize any financial gain from this project (hence there is no coin slot).

Now, back on topic.  Thank you for the advice, and I agree with the comments regarding the MAME marquee.   I plan on redesigning the marquee graphic, but I needed a temporary filler until I have some more time.  With two young children, a full time job and two more kids on the way, there are more important things than Adobe Illustrator (blasphemy!)  :P

touché mccoy178....  We shall see who prevails this season!

Since this was my first project, I learned alot from the design and construction, that will change if I build another one.

In fact, you have realized finacial loss from this project.  So you should charge the school accordingly.
