Title: BYOAC Google Sketchup collection

If this hasn't already been done, we should start a Sketchup collection in the Google warehouse with 3D cad models of arcade cabinets.  If done right, these can be annotated 3D plans that someone could build an arcade machine from.  They could also be used to design your game room, etc...

If we put it under a single collection, we should all be able to contribute to it. 

Any thoughts?

I've done a couple of cabinets as 3D models in Catia.  I think at one point I posted them here as STEP files.

Agreed.

I've been hoping we would be able to upload skp files to the wiki (http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/SketchUp_Tips), but that's not looking like it will happen. We definitely need a centralized repository for shared Sketchup models. Artifact, you up for writing guidelines for uploading and tagging Sketchup files to a BYOAC collection?

Those are some nice starter items for someone building a control panel.  Could you add the mounting plate to the trackball?

Would it be enough to create a BYOAC account and just have everyone work from that account?  Obviously you could maintain your own too but once a model was done, it could be added to the common account.

I wonder too if Happs or any of the other vendors would be interested in linking to models.  I've seen other websites that do this (cabinet makers) where they have links to sketchup models on their site.

Hey, Kaytrim, the mounting plate has been added. I was just being lazy and had not updated the model online - thanks for the kick-in-the-butt...

I have a WIP sketchup of mostly the wood parts of Pole Position standup cab.  Missing parts include the glass marquee, glass bezel, paper bezel, monitor, plastic "cockpit" around control panel, control panel, and side art.  I'll see if I can post it when I get home tonight.

Dimensions are close, but not perfect.  Within a 1/2 inch and/or 5 degrees or so: no matter how I measure the cab, they don't add up cleanly and close.  Also, I'm pretty sure I have a patched up cab, with mostly (I hope) original parts but some replacement parts.  :-\

I have no idea how I'm going to do the plastic cockpit part; lots of curves and not square angles.

At a minimum we should get links in the wiki or something to peoples collections.  I'll see what Saint can do.

I poked around a bit in the Help section of the Warehouse yesterday (yes, I actually read help files) and I couldn't find a way to have a group collection without it being tied to a specific Google account. I suppose we could set up a BYOAC account, then share the info with contributing members, but that sounds risky. Not that I wouldn't trust every board member with the account password, mind you...

I guess another option would be to have one person "moderate" the collection. Everyone could email/upload their skp files to one person or FTP, then the moderator would tag and upload each model.

Okay, here's my models, right now only the pole position cab (http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/search?uq=08403004543593180801).  It's still WIP, and I noticed it is missing one pair of wood parts after I uploaded it, but you can't see them anyway.
