I have a KLAX arcade console machine that was working fine...until it was accidently left on for 72 hours. There was "fog" in the basement one day where the console is...I originally thought it was smoke and where there is smoke there is (usually) fire. However, when I opened up the back of the console, there was no fire. Nothing even looked "burnt".
I let the machine "cool off" for 48 hours. When I plugged it back in, everything seemed to work fine...except there was nothing displayed on the screen. The sounds, controls, everything else works fine, just no screen.
I then figured that the tube had blown, but when I posted this message on another forum, it was suggested that it wasn't my tube but rather my chasis. After submitting the label information from the tube & chasis, I was told I have the following chasis...
"Wells 7900 series chassis"
I guess my question is, does anyone know how I should fix this chasis? Does it sound like something small, like a sauder point perhaps just overheated and loostened (wishful thinking...but I am trying to keep my hopes up) or do you think it's something more serious (ie. I have to FIND and replace the tube and/or chasis). I need an analysis from an expert.
Any help is GREATLY appreciated. I miss my KLAX! Thanks.

Could be all sorts of things. First thing I'd do is check and see if the fuse on the chassis is blown. If it is, that opens a whole can of worms.
-
was the fog from a left open window or was it the machine that cuased it?
if it were the machine I doubt a solder point came loose and if it did and cuased that there probably is not a solder point left anymmore.
if it were fog from outside and it was powered on the moisture could have shorted many things.
as peale stated I would check all the fuse's first but usually they don't smoke either.
-
I bet the 'fog' was from the flyback toasting. The fuse being blown would have been the kicker.
-
What exactly is a "flyback"? Can that be fixed or would it need to be replaced?
So when I check the fuse, if the fuse is shot, then I have to replace the fuse as well as get the "flyback" fixed?
Any experts, please advise. Thanks.

Flybacks are replaceable. If the fuse is blown, it blew for a reason. If you just replace it it'll blow again.
Best to let a pro fix this, I think.
-
Where are you located, just curious...
-
I'm located in Kingston, Ontario, Canada (eh) :D
So I went to purchase a replacement fuse (since the one in the console WAS blown). The fuse that was in the console had the following information on it...
SOTSC6 125V 3.5A
I couldn't find anything that matched. The closest I found was the same size and everything, but the fuse says...
250V 4.0A
Is it safe to put a higher fuse in to replace it? Or should I go with a lower amp (eg. 3.0A)?
Peale suggested it's best to let a pro fix it. By "pro" can I assume he means a TV repair guy? Is that where I should be looking in the yellowpages?
Thank you so much for any & all assistance on this.

I'm not an electrical expert, but I imagine it would be BAD to put that fuse in there.
-
never go higher on a fuse rating, you can go a lower but if the board wants to draw 3 amps and you put a 2 amp fuse then it will blow
-
So I guess I should hold out until I can find one that matches exactly (ie. 3.5a)?
What about the voltage? The fuse that blew was 125V. Any of the "current" fuses I saw say "250V".
So if I can find a fuse that matches the amps (3.5a)...is it safe/useful to go with a higher voltage?
Thanks for your help.

higher voltage on a fuse is o.k-its probably made in europe
you could try a 3 amp as i would expect your monitor to start up with that
did your fuse blow crapless i.e is the glass black?
did the fog smell like a lit match?
-
Okay, I'll try a 3 amp.
My fuse has two big "black" areas in it (is that "crapless") ;D
I wouldn't say the fog smelled exactly like a lit match...but I guess is smelled something like it. It did not smell like something was on fire...but rather like something electrical might have blown.
Thanks for you info. I'll let you know the results of the 3 amp.

Sounds like your monitor let the magic smoke out... now you gotta try to get it back in... it's difficult! :banghead:
-
i think peale is probably correct about the flyback toasting, either that or a pretty big cap blew
-
Well, I tried the 3.0amp fuse...turned it on (no screen)...and the fuse blew. I then tried the 4.0 amp fuse...turned it on (again, no screen)...and THAT fuse blew.
So I would assume from the results that whatever is managing the electric current BEFORE the fuse is what is "horked". And you guys believe it is probably the flyback.
I looked up "TV repair" in the yellowpages and found a couple of local places I can try. I will call them tomorrow.
Thank you so much everyone for your help and diagnosis. I have a much better understanding of the components of the console. I will let you know the outcome...FYI.
Thanks.

the degauss circuit or the diodes in the primary power circuit will blow a fuse pooless at power up,i have never seen a flyback do that but i guess it depends on the damage inside the flyback
good luck
-
Well, I guy came by to look at it and yes, it was the flyback. He said he could easily replace the flyback (and some circuits that blew). However, he has to FIND the model first. He did a search online and unfortunately he couldn't find it.
I guess what I need is a Sampon flyback (Model #:fb-3016). Mine was apparantely made in 1982. Does anyone know of a suitable replacement? (eg. the fb-3024? another brand?, etc.).
The other option is to replace the screen with a computer monitor that I have (COMPAQ S910). Does anyone know if this is possible (ie. it's possible to wire the new monitor to the old game/circuit board)?
Thanks for everyone's help so far and any additional assistance is appreciated.

have you tried bob roberts for the flyback
