Title: New encoder advice please
Post by: Marky_1979 on September 05, 2007, 08:13:45 pm
Hi guys I bought a hagstrom ke 72-t encoder about 2 years ago for my mame cabinet, and it has recently been playing up and needs replacing. I need some advice on whats out there and which ones are best I dont have a massive budget but would like something that gives great response to button presses as my current set up has some slow down when pressing buttons. Many thanks

Look at GroovyGameGear.com and Ultimarc.com  They both have excellent service and products.

as kaytrim stated.  Either go with the ultimarc ipac 4 or 2 keywiz or gpwiz.  On the keywiz/gpwiz, make surethe2nd one is a different id.

If you want to save a few bucks, look into the eco series at ggg.

I currently have 2 gpwiz eco in my 4 player cab and so far experence no delay or whatsoever.  The eco uses ide cables for wiring.

Both product are highly record.

You can get the eco versions without the IDE header and save $2 more.  In that case you need to solder the wires to the board.  It is easy to do though.

Hi guys I bought a hagstrom ke 72-t encoder...

Do you use the TB feature?  Are you going to leave that part as is if you do use it?

If you are going to replace the hagstrom totally, and want the TB feature on the same encoder, get the minipac.  Otherwise you'll need a keyboard encoder + TB encoder.

If you're not using the TB feature, or are keeping the hagstrom for that, then like others said.

I would stick with the KE72,  if something is broken on it, try to send it to Hagstrom,  I had no problem when i sent mine in after owning it for 7 years,  they fixed it free of charge and updated the chip,  KE72 is the Cadillac of encoders!!!!! :soapbox:

Please note that you will need a 2nd encoder if you get the minipac as it doesn't have enough input for 4 player.  keywiz/gpwiz are great as a 2nd encoder.

The trackerball part works perfectly so was thinking of keeping it set up to the hagstrom my only issue about sending the encoder back for repair is the fact I live in the UK cant find my receipt and feel it might be a real hassle to sort out. I think I will look at these other encoders Iv down scaled my arcade controls so it will only be a 2 player cabinet now with 6 buttons each and some admin buttons
