Pretty much any wire will do. Radio Shack calls it "hookup wire". A number of folks around here recommend cat 5 ethernet cable (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=70699.0) (that's 24awg by the way). Office Max should have that. I couldn't find anything on Lowes.com, but I'd be surprised if they didn't have something you could use.

The difference between 18 and 22 gauge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_wire_gauge) is the diameter. Neither is better, but the more electricity you're going to feed a wire, the larger (lower gauge) you want it to be. The thicker the wire, the harder it is to bend, and the more expensive it is because copper isn't cheap.

What does wire look like? It's long and skinny. Usually it's copper in the middle and has a plastic or other non-conductive jacket on it. It comes rolled up on a spool so that you can fit 100' feet of it in your car without poking anyones eye out. I have provided a picture of wire on a spool and another wire ready for action.

my whole cabinet is 22, your fine with that just go buy that 50ft roll of thermostat wire and split it youll get 50 foot of white and 50 ft of red cable, its real cheap forget the exact price.

Heck I even used CAT3 with no problems for over 1 year. Of course the controls are all soldered.
