Interesting PS3 Development:
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=27951
If the PS3 becomes easily moddable this will open up all sorts of possibilities.
Even in the unlikely event that the PS3 never becomes moddable, you'll still be able to legally run another OS such as Linux on it. Therefore it might eventually be possible to make it into a Linux based media PC.
Now all Sony needs to do is sort out the price...
-
Which they're doing, kind of. By the holidays they will have phased out the 20 GB and 60 GB models entirely in favor of the $80 GB, and I guarantee that the $80 GB one will occupy the price space that the $60 GB one is currently holding, leaving a $500 box and abandoning the $600 sku altogether. Now, $500 is hardly a sorted out price. I won't be getting one until it's under $300, and probably not until it's under $200, and that is assuming that before me it sells in high enough numbers to make it a system that I even want by that time. But, at least it's a start . . .

For many people it's already a linux-based media PC, if a little overpriced.
The headline seems to be implying you're getting something for nothing ("PlayTV unlocks free digital TV"). Unless I'm missing something, it just provides the tuners. I'm assuming you'll still have to supply the signal, either from an HDTV antenna or a satellite source. I wonder if it'll have a cablecard reader so you can use it with paid cable/satellite?

A lot of digital channels are free in the UK.

In the U.S., it's not. At least where I live it's not free. Gotta pay the fees if you want Digital. Hell, you gotta pay the fees if you want anything at all.
The cable company are jackasses. There's a big push to completely shut down the old broadcast antennas. Which would be fine if the cable companies continued to offer/allow access to at least the basic channel package for free. However, they've altered it so you have to pay $12 a month (again in my area). If you decide to opt for what used to be a free service, the cable guy will come out and physically cut the cable at first drop from the pole since they no longer, "offer," it. :badmood: :timebomb:
When I was in High School, cable companies were required to send out, at a very minimum, a basic feed. Even if you didn't pay for the cable, you got something such as the local news channel and PBS and Spanish. Usually channels 2-13 minus a few here and there. The same feeds one would get through broadcast. At some point between then and now, that policy changed and cable companies started charging, even for the same type of service used to receive through an antennae.

The linux guys need to figure how to access the GPU properly and access all the CPU cores. Then we are talking serious processing power.
I see the PS3 running XP in the near too distant future, not to mention MAC OS X. :applaud:

I just noticed that it's a press release, not an independent article. It's just market-speak for "it's an over-the-air digital tuner, in case you didn't already have a cheaper one already". If they support cablecards I'll seriously consider it.

No broadcast HDTV at all? Many stations are broadcasting digital signals now and they're required to by 2009 (unless it's been extended again). I think we supposedly have 4 or 5 of them here in DFW.

Not going to happen. It doesn't have the power to emulate Intel CPUs. The reason linux works is it was compiled for the Cell.

I thought the Cel is PPC compatible?

There are five (or is it six?) registered DTV stations where I live, but I nor any of my friends are able to receive them over the air. I have no idea if it's because they're too far away, the setup we've got, or what. :dunno
I'm aware of zero HDTV broadcasters. It might be one of the five I mentioned, but again, I have no idea.
At this point, I'm kind of ranking the appeal of broadcast DTV somewhere above that HD Radio. It's something I have some interest in and I'm nt disgusted by the ---smurf-poop--- advertising yet.

What does the PSBox run?

It's probably a close cousin, but there are plenty of PPC platforms out there and as far as I know nobody has been able to run PPC Mac software on anything but Mac hardware.
What does the PSBox run?
I don't understand the question. Are you talking about the PS1 emulator for PC/Xbox?

Oops, I got my names mixed up. I meant the GSCube. I have no idea what the PS3 version would be called. A CBE server?

I receive HD digital stations for CBS, ABC, FOX, NBC, WB all over the air for free with a $30 radio shack antenna and I'm 30 miles from the towers.
I've heard of people close to the towers able to pickup those HD stations with a paperclip attached to their antenna input.
-
I keep meaning to pick up an antenna now that I live in a major metropolitan city, but $30 is just a lot of money for TV when you're poor. I've had an antenna sitting in my shopping cart at Amazon for weeks, and I just can't get myself to hit that damned proceed to checkout button. :'(

That's in reference to cable. Just an aside, did you read the other posts after that one? The later ones might be more relevant to over the air.
