Title: I'd like to thank our wives!
Post by: tomsurfnj on August 31, 2007, 09:56:42 am
I hope everyone has a supportive spouse.

My friend secured a Golden Tee 2k machine for for me at the great price of FREE. So my wife and I go to pick it up. It does not fit in the back of my small pickup. Plan B was to remove the control panel. Try it again. Bingo it just fits.  I then get home and get out and onto a hand truck. My neighbor gives me a hand into the house. OOPS it won't fit into our hallway to the room. 28.5 inches wide. Plan B my wife has us bring it to our back porch for disassembly. She saved me from having to take it apart outside while being eaten my mosquito's. Well about an hour later I have it all taken apart and move into the room where it will stay.  I heard stories of machines being made too big  for the move, but I had no other choice. I'm sorry I had to take it apart. Now I just have to put it back together and Mame it.

My wife has been very supportive, or at least begrudgingly approving when I get a machine. Now if only she would be as approving of me working on them, maybe most of them would more fully functional. ;D

My wife gives me a lot of crap about it, but it's kind of play-crap. I think overall she likes the hobby for me but she likes to bust my chops about not being able to park in the garage because I have 3 or 4 cabs in there in various state of disrepair.

Last Sunday my wife went with me to help pick up a couple free project cabs, even helped clean the garage for space.

Just this morning she went with me to check out a cab to purchase. She actually got up two hours early, followed me in the pickup with the intent of helping me load the cab, take it home and unload herself (with son's help) because I had to go to work. God I love my wife.

Turns out we didn't get the cab as it wasn't what was advertised.

Oh yes supportive wives are awesome.

It's funny I went to look at a cab for sale the other day and she didn't even bat an eye.

Amazing once you bring home a game that "they" like to play. (bust-a-move)

Turn's out I didn't get it.  Which is good because I don't have room.

Wouldnt know what to do with out the support of my other half.
She's put up with all my "crazy" working on 2 cabinets and 2 control panels. Now im after a 29" candy shes planning on giving me a room in the extension that I can fill with cabinets!!!! What a woman (She aint half bad a streetfighter 2 too!! ;))

I agree with Tomsurfnj. I hope everyone has a supportive spouse. ;)

I have been collecting/fixing/MAMEing for about 2 years.  The first half a dozen or so cabs that I got were not well received by my spouse, but she has grown to accept and even slightly support my crazy hobby.  She knows it keeps me out of trouble... and as long as I don't dip into the household expense account, she's cool with my purchases.

I have tried to get games that I thought she would like, but  I could not really get her to hang out for very long in the gameroom...

That is...until I got a Tempest machine... she really loves that machine... I would have never guessed...

Anyway, she is more supportive now that she has a game she likes.

count yourselves lucky, no support would be an understatement for me.  She has finally (after years of talking about it, and starting to buy parts) accepted it may happen one day.  That is, of course, after all the things SHE thinks need doing around the house.  Got lots of grief just for picking up a betson trackball - and that was only $10 (local surplus store, no shipping).

So if any of your wives are single, please pass along a phone number  ;)

Rec.games.pinball on usenet has some funny wife humor sometimes.

[Original poster]  "I just went through a better divorce, and I just want to tell all you guys to go home and hug your wife and tell her you love her right now.  Make them feel special before it's too late"
[Responder 1] "My wife says to thank you for your advice"
[Responder 2] "When I hugged my wife and said I loved her, she just looked me in the eye and said 'No, you can't buy another one'"

"I dated this lady three months.  Then last night I took her to my house for the first time.  She say my living full full of pins and said 'After we get married and clear all this stuff you, we can really make this place nice'.  I broke up with her right there and then"

"What's your wife's favorite pin?"  "My wife's favorite is the one going out the door"

AMEN!

My wife was and is completely awesome about the entire hobby, It took me over a year of planning and building my cabinet and she was great.. Not to mention it was all I thought and talked about that entire year! I really can't thank her enough.

Oh yea and check this out. We live in a small house and the only place we could put was in the master bedroom. Yes that's our bed post in the pic!

Just break 'em in right fella's.
After forays into radio controlled planes, Jeeps, expensive mountain bikes, shooting and motocross/dirt bikes, this seems like a pretty reasonable hobby. Three cabinets so far and no protest.

I'm home, spend time with my daughter, and I'm not trying to pick up slobs at the nudie bar. I suppose she knows things could be worse.  ;)

My wife wasn't really supportive of the games UNTIL she saw the hit they made at our daughter's bday party- since then she's had a newfound interest in them..   :D

I think she realizes now how special they really are to have!

My wife had been supportive up to a point. She likes the MAME cabinet, but still DESPISES all the time I spent planning and working bit-by-bit on it. As it turns out she doesn't like to talk about the finer points of picking a joystick. I had to struggle to get my JAMMA cabinet, but once Mr Driller 2 was in it she became instantly addicted. She didn't bat an eye when I brought home the Neo-Geo 2-slot (with Bust-A-Move).

Unfortunately, we're now going to be "seperated" and probably get divorced (not directly due to the games).

On the plus side I only have 3 cabs to move (and a cocktail) but I'm guessing my collection will be building soon. I'm moving back to my hometown and one of my friends is "the guy" who knows everybody in town. There have been times when the biggest operator in town calls HIM when he needs to clear out warehouse space. It seems like a good time to have as many diversions as possible.

Zero support over here... I started a MAME project 2 years ago that still is not completely assembled. She just thinks it's a waste of time and money that should be used on other things and she refuses to let me put it in the house. I have to wait until the basement gets finished which is in the 5 year plan.

I want to start collecting dedicated machines also but it'll be tough to get them into the house. I have someone willing to sell me a Centipede for $200 that has only been in home use it's whole life and it's in mint cosmetic condition, just needs a cap kit. It's in Rochester and I'm in Albany.

I was telling her about it today... and I quote " I'm not impressed. Spending a whole day and $100 in gas to get this thing is a waste." She just has no love for the hobby.

If anyone is passing through Rochester towards Albany let me know. I still want this cab really bad. It's #1 on my wanted list. If I can get it I'll just hide in my office at work!

My wife's dad is an avid golfer.
She never saw him at all on the weekends, when she was growing up.

Any time she even THINKS about giving me a hard time for my hobbies I threaten to take up golf again.

My wife was in the garage when I was working on my machine and knocked the neck board off, breaking the glass tube and screwing my tube. The first thing she did was say 'don't worry we'll buy a new one', she's awesome.

.....  She doesn't play games much, about the only game she likes to play is Golden Tee (She is quite competive, when she is feeling overly confident, she likes to play strip golden tee.)

There, I have revealed too much.

My wife is awesome.  At first she thought it would be ugly, but she didn't mind.  We do a lot of give and take.  She knew that I really wanted it, and that was enough.  But over time, she actually got quite excited about it.  I feel sorry for people here whose wives seem to just lay down the law.  I mean, I don't think it's necessarily uncalled for.  There are some things I simply wouldn't do.  I would no let my wife put Star Trek collector plates on our living room wall, for example.   Period.  Doesn't matter how much she wanted to.  No way.  And if my wife felt that strongly about an arcade cabinet, well, what can I say.  You can't expect someone to live with something they hate so much on a daily basis.  So, hopefully it's just something like that for you people without any support.  I'm sorry for you and I hope it's just this one thing with which you are met with such stubbornness on.
