Title: New electrical sub forum ?
Post by: gatordad on August 29, 2007, 10:24:12 am
There seems to be a category for almost everything useful when building /  rehabbing except electrical ie: wiring up cp's, led's, ipac's key wiz's led wiz's and powering your cab using your pc for power etc. I realize that most of the support for these items are maintained through the various vendors (Ultimarc and GGG) but there is so much knowledge here on these boards that I think it might be useful and helpful.
These topics are scatted throughout the various forums, and a catch all could help further organize the boards.
Just my idea but its your site.
What do you think?
Regards

This would spread out the knowledge more than it would condense it IMO. The less separate forums, the better. Besides, noone would use it anyway and the mods would just have to work more moving threads around.

The search function works just fine finding appropriate threads - it just takes some effort.

Why not change Woodworking into a catchall like Building, or Construction, and have everything about physically assembling cabs in there.

Yeah, my first thoughts are, "God, that would be handy while wiring my cab."  But then my cab would be wired and I'd almost never pop in there.  So I'd end up not even being able to pay forward the help I got.  Conversely, if a wiring question pops up in a thread I frequent I'm probably going to click on it and answer any questions I can.  It just doesn't strike me that there are enough people here who are passionate about electrical to make it work.  What you'll end up with is a bunch of people posting questions in that forum that are just ignored, where if the same question gets asked in Main it's likely to be answered within the hour.

I broke a tie by agreeing with shmokes.  I actually never look at the individual sections anyway, my bookmark for the forum is a "view all unread" page, so I would see the post wherever it is, but many would not.

I would like to see a dedicated electronics forum or subforum.  Preferably a dedicated forum.

I agree. A catch all forum for anything to do with electrical, electronics, wiring, soldering, etc. would be very helpful for many.

Of course, if you segregate those topics into a subforum, the subforum will get far less traffic than the topic currently sees in Main.  Less traffic, less help.

I do not like subforums ...... I forget they even exist.    I think a separate electrical forum is an excellent idea.

Agreed.  And electronics, not electrical, though electrical elements would obviously be part of it.

I'm not sure we'd need to specify... we get an awful lot of wiring questions.  Maybe more than we do on the electronics being connected.  If we were to do it, "Electric/Electronic" would be a good category name.

I agree. I would imagine that all of the electrically savvy members as well as the electronic vendors would tend to keep an eye on the forum. This would be a great resource for builders who have these types of questions.

I think this is a great idea.
Of course being an electrician for 30+ years may make me a little biased.

Old thread's back to life, from a different discussion here's how Saint feels...

I mean, I see THREE Jukebox forums...Why are SK Jukebox and UncleTs Jukebox not subforums of the Audio/Jukebox/MP3 forum ? I NEVER EVER visit either of those two...

Same thing for DOS/WinCab and PowerMAME, why are those not subforums of Software ? Never visit these either...

But the bottom line is that it annoys me that every idea is simply turned down in seconds, without giving it a chance for a while....

I leave any of these posts requesting forums up for at least a week or two before weighing in myself, specifically so users can get a good chance to discuss it.

The forums you're mentioning above are an entirely separate subject. Those are all support forums requested by the author or someone with a vested interest and are dedicated to a single product. Anyone in a related field who wants one can ask for one and if we agree on some basic rules (basically what's already posted) I'll set it up for them. Requesting sub-forums is a different beast. I'd be happy, for instance, to see a good electrical forum had user demand been there...

Looks like the voting is 6 of one and a half a dozen of the other.

Maybe a poll in the main forum will help.
