Title: Laptop Monitor cable
Post by: stephenp1983 on August 22, 2007, 09:34:47 pm
I have just taken a laptop lcd off from the base, since I'm planning to use it for a project.  Does anyone know where I might find an extension to the cable type pictured below?  It currently won't reach on what I'm planning to do.

If you take the LCD out of the housing, you might get an inch or two more of cable. Usually that flat ribbon cable connects further up on the back of the LCD. Of course, I don't know how much more cable you need, so this might not help much.
As for extensions, I've never heard of one...but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

You could always do what I"m currently doing with my laptop and take the LCD out of the housing, then flip the screen around so it looks almost like one of those tablet laptops (but it doesn't close all the way).

Thanks, I'll try to see how much is stored in the casing, but I'll probably need more.  I'll see what I can manage.

You might have to end up making one for yourself tbh, usually those connectors and most things to do with laptop screen are proprietary :(

Might just be easier to find some way of extending the flat cable itself rather than extending from connector to connector.

I've been search around all morning and have been unable to find anything :(

Maybe you could find the replacement part number of the LCD cable and order another one from HP, then splice the two together.
Here's an eBay auction of someone selling a handful of those cables from various laptops, but they might not have the same type you need: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220141616786

Thanks I'll check it out.  Do you think splicing it would mess up the signal though?

I have no idea ???
I've never tried to splice a flat ribbon cable before. I wouldn't try it your only cable just in case it doesn't work.
;) Better safe than sorry.
