My Asteroids is in need of a little bit of loving to get back to 100%. I was planning on taking the panel into my dad's work and sandblasting it to get all of the old paint away and then stepping the sand down to a fine grit to make it smooth. I should get a good surface to work with for stencils.
Is this overkill? What's the general approach to repainting metal panels like an Asteroids?
-
Is the panel in such a bad condition? Maybe just touching up would be the way to go? Maybe you can find a better panel and sell the one you have? I like as original as it gets, even if it's not 100% perfect. With other panels you can get NOS cpo, with this panel the graphics is painted on.

Here's a pic. You can see the wear, but there is also some light rust happening. It's not bent or anything, so it's not going to be hard to save. I'm just wondering if the sandblasting would provide me the best surface to paint on while also helping to get rid of all the rust. The rust isn't deep, it's just that spotty surface stuff.

PS. torez, I saw an Omega Race cockpit for under $400 yesterday. I don't have room for it though.

ArcadeShop stock two different types of overlay if you want to go that route -- a "full" overlay and a "graphics" only overlay.
-
I considered doing the full overlay over the existing paint to preserve the originality of it all, but to get the best contact possible I still think I'd like to get rid of the old paint, throw a primer on their (for tack), and then use the overlay.
I think that I'm overthinking this whole project.

What's the location? I got a cocktail table couple of days ago and that's all the space I have, but I know someone who may be interested.

Do you have stencils? Where did you get them?
If you are going to use stencils, then I think the way you are planning on doing it is fine. I don't think it's overkill. You will be much happier in the end. Just do it slow and take your time and not rush it.

I've been to Salt Lake City, but that was like 13 years ago. I don't see many of these sit down Omega Races around. :(
