Title: Using XBOX controllers for players 3 and 4 on jamma cabinet
Post by: MartyNg on August 15, 2007, 07:23:00 am
After quite a few months away from the forums to finish some studies, I am finally back. I completed a 2-player cabinet in the winter, and am now at a point where I would like to have capability for players 3 and 4 using controllers.

I just bought a new case with 2 USB ports on the front for the purpose of hooking up controllers. I have a few XBOX 1 controllers lying around and figured I could just find adapters that would convert XBOX -> USB. I shopped around a bit, but was only able to find an external box that I would plug the controllers into, and the box would conect to a USB port.....not the best looking solution.

Anyone know where to get a simple little converter for XBOX directly to USB? I should point out that I will use these controllers mostly for player 3 and 4, and my emulator use will be very limited on this cabinet, do I don't care about rumble, memory cards, etc.

Also, what's the best way to configure such controllers for command line mame? (on Windows XP)

Thank you!

you could always make your own adaptors.  the xbox controllers are USB, just with a non standard connector. (there is an extra wire, but you dont need it)

all you need are two xbox controllerextension cables, and two usb extension cables.  cut them all in half (or however long you want them).  then just splice the 4 wires together and tape them, or use heatshrink tubing.  doing it this way you will end up with two cables to attach your controllers to usb, and two cables that add usb ports to your xbox.

if i didnt explain myself well enough, let me know

What a chump I am.....I didn't even think of ebay until just now. I found tons of them for just a few bucks each using search "Xbox to USB". Now, the real question that is more appropriate for this forum.....
Are you guys successfully using XBOX controllers in your MAME cabinet through USB? Are you able to use 2 at once? Do I have simply download redclouds XBCD driver, and configure each of the buttons to a keyboard key to use in mame?

Thanks again!
