Title: upgrading mame....certain way to do it?
Post by: hulkster on August 14, 2007, 02:49:48 pm
so im going from mame 107 (i think) to the new version 118 as it gives the ability to play sf3.

---side note --- i say "i think" because its whatever version of mame added the golden tee games to playable status.

anyway, i downloaded the new version and after making a copy of my current mame directory for backup reasons, i just put the new mame.exe in the place of the old one, and everything worked.  is that an okay way of upgrading or do i need run some stuff from the cmd?

ive got hiscore.dat, catver.ini, etc. all from the old version....do those need to be updated as well?

What frontend are you running?  I know after I upgraded I just made sure Mala had all the settings I wanted.  No reason to bother changing the mame.ini yourself if a frontend can keep uptodate with whatever version of mame you are running.

im using mala for my FE.  i know that mala takes care of most everything, but i was more concerned with my hiscore.dat, catver, etc. not being compatible or whatever.  i dont want to get the new high score in track n field, only for it not to be saved!

Everything should be fine asside from hiscore.dat since I havn't set it up on mine yet.  Someone else might be able to verify it for you.

Sure wish someone would patch up MAME to support hiscores and disable all the warnings and loading screens.  I'll paypal anyone who does it $3.

yeah, that would be nice.

My thoughts exactly.  At least offer up minimum wage if you want someone to recode mame.

well usually, if i wait long enough, someone will do it for free and offer it up to everyone because of the community atmosphere this place has.  seeing as how thats what mame is in the first place....someone spent a lot of time to code it up and everything, and then just gave it to others for free.  sounds kinda stingy to take someone elses work, and then ask someone to pay for a modification  :dunno

I don't see anyone asking for pay.  We just doubt if $3 is going to send someone off for an hour to do the work.  The reason no one is posting a compiled version for people to download is because the devs frown heavily upon that.   Check out Mr. Do's page.  Compiling is not complicated, just a little time consuming.

Ah ha!  I'll have to remember that.

Oh no, I care what criminals think about what I do with their illegal software!   :timebomb:
$3 is just to kick someone into doing the modifications.  I'm sure there's plenty of other people that would like the same version.

Just giving you a hard time.

There was a guy that would compile and make them available for download.  That didn't go over well at all.

The internet is free, who wants to make me a webpage for $3?  :)

This usually works.  However sometimes, not often, it's not enough.  Some games might have changed enough so that the old nvram or cfg files might not work, cause that game to act funny, or even crash (deleting said files fix this problem, if any).  Other times the core changed options or somethings else, so the mame.ini needs to be updated to match.  Or some other change might not work with old files.

I always put the new mame in a new folder (but I look at source); many people just copy over with little problems.  Just be aware some minor problems sometimes (abit rarely) pop up that might be fixed by putting in a new folder (but then you need to redo any remaps, etc).

Catver.ini should be updated for info on the new games and catch any name changes, but you don't need to update to play games.  As said by others, hiscore.dat was dropped by official mame, superseded by savestate/autosavestate.  Note many people who used hiscore.dat don't like/trust autosavestate yet, and the track&field driver isn't supporting savestate yet.

Side note, mame can use help adding savestate to games that don't have it yet.  The more help, the better the support, and the more games, and the stable it will be.  OTOH, someone who would pay $3 instead of compiling himself probably doesn't know enough to help add savestate. :P
